Aizen is a tall man with brown hair and eyes. In Soul Society, he wore black glasses and a hairstyle parted on the right side of his head, giving him a friendly appearance. However, upon revealing his true colors and leaving for Hueco Mundo, Aizen radically changed his appearance, tearing off his captain's haori, which in his case had wide sleeves, discarding his glasses, and changing to a slicked-back hairstyle with a lock of hair that runs almost down the middle of his face. Later, in Hueco Mundo, he dressed in the Arrancar style, with long white robes with black borders, to which he added, perhaps to demonstrate his preeminence over the rest, a thick purple cloth belt.

Despite holding a position of great authority and currently being the series' main villain, Aizen is surprisingly kind and courteous to all his interlocutors, allies, and even enemies. His speech is slow and deliberate, and his face usually displays a serene calm, as if everything happening around him has been premeditated. In fact, he has very rarely shown signs of alarm or surprise, seemingly taking advantage of any event, even plans devised against him. In the Soul Society, everyone considered Aizen one of the most agreeable and respected captains, as well as beloved and admired by all Shinigami, especially his closest subordinates. This, however, was yet another example of his dangerous and manipulative nature, which allowed him to project an image completely different from his true self. The real Aizen cares little for those who serve him (both past and present), seeing them as mere pawns in a vast chess game. In his own words, he is not affected by any kind of ethics or morals, which he sees as unnecessary restrictions on his potential.

Aizen lacks all honor and compassion, not hesitating for a single moment to use and even murder as many people as necessary to achieve his goals. One of his most vile acts is to fake his own death so that Momo Hinamori is forced to attack Tōshirō Hitsugaya, her childhood best friend, for the death of her beloved captain.
