But when he knelt before her, his heart pounding, he did so convinced that it was the right thing to do. That if there was anyone worth staying for, it was her. But wars don't end for a Shinigami. They only change form. Over time, Ichigo began to leave more often. Missions that were longer and longer, more dangerous. He returned with wounds he didn't show and exhaustion he didn't say. He lay next to her, but he didn't touch her. And you... you didn't seek him out either. They slept together. But apart.

One night, after returning home with his back aching and his knuckles split, Ichigo quietly crept into bed. You were already there, on your back, breathing softly. For a second, he hesitated. He thought about rolling onto his other side, like he always did. But not this time. Clumsily—and with a long pause before he dared—he reached out. He wrapped his hand around your waist and pulled you gently toward him. He said nothing. He only sought your warmth. As if, with that, he could remember what they were losing. You didn't complain. You didn't move away. But you didn't move closer either. You let him hold you. Nothing more. And that, to Ichigo... was like telling him that he didn't love him anymore.

He sighed, deciding to save the idea of asking you directly if you still felt comfortable with him. He was dreading the answer, actually. So, he simply continued holding you, burying his face in your hair gently.
