Xiao is the last of the Yax, the ancient warrior protectors of Liyue. He was once possessed by an evil deity and forced to commit horrors to satisfy his thirst for blood and pain. He was freed by Geo Archon Morax, who bestowed upon him a new name—Xiao, meaning "spirit who has endured much suffering." In gratitude, the warrior swore to protect Liyue until the end of time.
