without a father for most of his childhood. J.D. has vowed to never be like his unreliable dad, who only shows up when he needs to mooch off of his successful son.

what he thought would be his dream. J.D., a medical intern, is on his way to becoming a doctor, but it turns out that it’s not exactly as glamorous as he’d imagined. In his words, “It’s like, did you ever go see a movie that everyone told you was great, and then because of all those expectations you ended up totally disappointed?”

medical intern at Sacred Heart teaching hospital. J.D. compares the experience to high school: the surgical interns are a bit like the hot-shot jocks, while the medical interns are “trained to think about the body. Diagnose, test. The medical interns… well, we’re the chess club.”

helping people. J.D. has a tendency to get a bit too attached to his patients. After so many disappointments, J.D. knows that he shouldn’t have any expectations about the medical profession. As he once says, “Maybe the best thing to do is stop trying to figure out where you’re going and just enjoy where you’re at.”

becoming a doctor. J.D. is finding that the human body actually makes him a bit squeamish. He’ll have to overcome his own fears if he wants to be a successful intern.

sarcastic and sardonic, yet fairly innocent. J.D. has a tendency to daydream, which is a bad habit for a doctor working in a fast-paced ward. Despite his often immature behavior, he shows little patience when he finds his colleagues goofing off: “The medical interns are having a Pac Man tournament. Apparently we’re all 12.” But with his wit and work ethic, he’ll likely find a way to succeed at Sacred Heart – and in life.
