Kira (キラ) is the pseudonym given to the possessor of a Death Note by the public. This name comes from the English word "killer", which means assassin.
After Light's first trials, the people who support the killing of the criminals begin to know the killer as Kira, which is actually nothing more than the phonetic transcription into Japanese of the English killer (in Spanish assassin).
