L begins investigating the mysterious cases of death by heart attack happening around the world. He realizes that all the victims were criminals and concludes that someone is killing them with some kind of supernatural power. L has black eyes and hair and is extremely pale; he loves sweets. Using his intelligence, L conducts tests and discovers that Kira needs to see the face and know the name of the person in order to kill them. He then locates the region where Kira is—in Japan, near Tokyo.
He joins the Japanese Task Force and begins investigating several suspicious individuals, but the main focus becomes Light Yagami, a highly intelligent student and the son of the police chief.
L begins to watch Light closely, even pretending to be his friend to observe him better. During this time, he tries to prove that Light is Kira, but never manages to obtain definitive proof.
