Light Yagami is depicted as a highly intelligent, calculating young man with a heightened sense of justice. During the story, he comes into possession of a Death Note, which allows him to kill someone with impunity simply by writing their name and imagining their face. As the story progresses, believing himself to be the god of a new world, Yagami becomes quite arrogant and haughty.

Using the Death Note, Light Yagami decided to create a new world without criminals and began punishing all who committed crimes. But later, when Detective L put him in an awkward position, he began gradually eliminating everyone who sought him out or stood in his way.

In Japanese, his surname is written with the Kanji characters 夜[3] for "night" and 神[4] for "god," and his given name is written with the character for "moon" (月[5], read as Raito instead of the standard tsuki). In English, his name is written as "Light."

Light is a young man of above-average height with light brown hair and brown eyes. During Part I, he sometimes wore his school uniform, consisting of a brown suit and red tie, and casual clothes: a shirt with a blazer or a V-neck sweater with a collared sweater underneath. In Part II, he prefers to wear suits. Light has medium-length brown hair with bangs and hazel eyes. Other Yagami traits include chiseled features, flawless fair skin, and an infectious, charismatic smile. He is always neatly dressed. Light is introduced as a teenager with exceptional intellectual abilities, a calculating and cunning man. However, after receiving the notebook, Light Yagami decided to become God and create a new world without criminals. He partially succeeded, but he didn't realize that by killing other criminals, he himself became one. He is moderately sociable, but lacks stable friends and girlfriends. He is uninterested in the activities of his peers, constantly remaining alone with his hobbies. Since childhood, Light hated crime and was guided by a sense of justice in his actions, but he did not show himself unnecessarily.

Yagami possesses a sharp, tenacious mind and analytical thinking. He is skilled at cunning, lying, and manipulation, often using people as puppets because he sees no one as his equal.

On the surface, Yagami appears emotionless and calm. In reality, he suffers from delusions of grandeur, hypocrisy, sudden emotional outbursts, and overt psychoses. He is cruel, apathetic, and adventurous by nature. Driven by emotions and psychological problems, he makes serious mistakes, creates dangerous situations, and fails to understand the consequences of his actions. However, despite all his crimes, Light will never become the embodiment of pure evil. He sincerely loves his father and sister (he didn't care when his father died, so this claim is debatable) and will never stop caring for them. Thus, humanity and compassion will forever remain within him.

At the beginning of the manga and series, Light is Japan's top student; at the beginning of the film, he's a college student. He's the son of Soichiro Yagami, the second-in-command in the Japanese police force. Light always wanted to become a police officer to catch criminals and punish them for their crimes. He was skeptical of the world around him and didn't enjoy life. Light believed the world was mired in lies and demanded the arrival of a new God who would cleanse it of its evil deeds.

L's tricks narrowed the pool of suspects from the start; he broadcast his voice on Japanese television and challenged Light, who by then was better known as Kira. From the moment Light realized he was a suspect, he began killing not only criminals but also those hunting him. He tried to act not only stealthily but also with a certain grace (as in the episode where, before killing all the agents tracking him, Light revealed his true face to the last one before he died). On the day Light entered college, a strange man in rumpled clothes, disheveled hair, and dark circles under his eyes sat down next to him. He told Light that his name was L and that he wanted Light's help in capturing Kira. This led Light to join the squad hunting him. Then, new murders began to occur, in which Light was not involved, and someone announced on television that he was Kira.

L Lawlight, better known as L (エル, Eru), is one of the main characters in the anime and manga series Death Note. Considered the world's best detective, he investigates the case of a serial killer nicknamed "Kira."

L (El) is a young man with a slender build, pale skin, tousled, long black hair, and dark eyes. One of his most noticeable features is the bags under his eyes caused by lack of sleep. He wears blue jeans and a white long-sleeved shirt. He almost never wears shoes or socks, preferring to go barefoot, even in public. He arrived at Light Yagami's school barefoot and sat on a bench, not even bothering to put on shoes before going on stage.

L is quite secretive and communicates with the world only through his assistant, Watari. He never shows his face to the world, using only a capital L, written in either Old English MT or Cloister Black font. He most likely uses Cloister Black, as the font for Watari's initial, W, differs from Old English MT.

After meeting with the Japanese task force, he asks them to call him "Ryuzaki or Ryuga" as an additional security measure. None of the task force members ever learn his real name, and it is never properly revealed in either the manga or anime.

Many, looking at his disheveled and listless appearance, doubt his powers of deduction, although in reality, L possesses a remarkable intellect. L tends to doubt everything presented to him and is extremely meticulous and analytical. He is adept at deceiving his opponents and is willing to go to extreme lengths to solve a case. Some of his tactics are quite drastic, such as sending death row inmate Lind L. Taylor as himself to lure out Kira, while others seem bizarre, such as handcuffing himself to a suspect, Light Yagami. He also has a dry sense of humor and is not averse to making sarcastic remarks to people. While he is generally polite to some (such as task force member Shuichi Aizawa), L can sometimes come across as condescending.

Using all sorts of tricks, misinformation, omissions, insight into the human psyche, and sometimes even information from criminal circles, L lures the suspected killer into a false sense of security. Thanks to his method of analysis, L always calculates the probability of the killer's appearance. For example, he estimated the probability that Light is Kira at five percent, although his calculations differ from his personal opinion, in which he is over 90% certain of the killer's true identity. This suggests that L suspected Light from the very beginning. As the manga's author, Tsugumi Ohba, himself said about the essence of L's tactics: "The whole truth is that he's a liar."

For example, he prefers to sit with his legs crossed, even on chairs and armchairs. However, there is an explanation for this. He claims that when he sits normally, his ability to reason drops by 40%. He enjoys sweet and unusual food combinations, such as meat and melon. He holds objects with his index finger and thumb, while raising his hand upward. It is also interesting that in the manga, L sits in a meditative pose while thinking. While thinking, L also often rearranges objects or arranges food in a certain way. Meanwhile, Lowlight's habits are considered inappropriate and rude, namely: biting his nails, slouching while walking and sitting, sitting on furniture with his feet, chewing, talking with his mouth open, and expressing personal observations that could be offensive to the recipient of the conversation.

Like Light, L has pride and a fear of being wrong about his theories. This stems from his worldwide status as the world's best detective.

L spends most of his time sitting, but this does not prevent him from being a good athlete. Having lived in England for 5 years, he became the champion of the English Children's Tennis Cup. He also has a skill in martial arts, which is clearly demonstrated during his fight with Light. In chapter 38 of the manga, Light suggests that he remains skinny because he mainly consumes sweets, and all the glucose is used by the brain.

According to Tsugumi Ohba, when asked about L's ethnicity, he says, "I think he's a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian, and a quarter French or Italian, something like that." Ohba also mentioned that L is smart because "the plot requires it." He also added that he personally thinks L is a little evil.

L notices a large number of criminals dying of heart attacks in a short period of time and suspects someone in Japan is behind it. He decides to join the investigation and seeks cooperation with the FBI. First, he decides to test his suspicions, so he broadcasts news reports at different times in different regions with anchor Lind L. Taylor, introducing himself as "L" and claiming that "Kira is evil." This provokes Kira, who commits murder using the Death Note. Kira reveals himself, and L confirms that this is the work of a specific person and the killer is located in the Kanto region of Japan, as that is where the broadcast was broadcast. Soon, due to the fact that criminals are dying during free time outside of school, L hypothesizes that Kira is a high school student or university student. Shortly after this incident, criminals begin dying within an hour of each other, deliberately contradicting El's theory by revealing that Kira has access to sensitive police information. He therefore requests that 12 FBI agents monitor those closest to each member of the police force.

All the agents sent to spy on her are killed by Kira. This frightens the FBI staff, and most of them quit, fearing death. L books a room at the hotel (which he asked to be considered his headquarters) where the six first met L, so they can regularly conduct their investigation. He gives them fake police badges and belt buckles, allowing them to contact L in case of emergency.

L finds photographs of Ray Penber, which show him reaching for something behind him before dying right next to the train. Furthermore, Naomi Misora, Ray Penber's wife and a former FBI agent who had once solved a case with L involving serial murders in Los Angeles, has mysteriously disappeared. L assumes she died at Kira's hands, as it didn't seem likely that Misora ​​would commit suicide over her husband's death. These two factors lead L to conclude that Kira must be one of the people Ray was tracking.

L continues to attend Tooh, confident in his convictions and interrogation skills, while attempting to expose Light and make him an enemy. He does so without skimping on subterfuge and provocation, appearing to be ready to "go on the offensive." L understands this is something of a gamble and knows well that his act of direct confrontation could prove fatal, but because he is convinced of his cause, he is confident that his adversary will not yet risk revealing their secret identity by killing him.

When L reveals his true identity as Ryuga, Light increases his guard but doesn't attempt to write his name down in the notebook—it's clearly fake. Light has no way of knowing whether L is the real L or a plant. He's also certain that L has already introduced himself to Soichiro's father, and if he kills him, he'll expose himself. If this plant is L, and his real name is Ryuga, then if Light kills him, L will live on and won't reveal his identity, giving him an advantage over Kira. Furthermore, by writing the name "Ryuga Hideki" and remembering the face of the singer who shares that name, Light will mistakenly kill the pop singer, further shifting the blame to Light being Kira. Thus, if L's thoughts are correct and Light is at a dead end, unable to continue killing people, any attempt to eliminate the pursuers will confirm the detectives' suspicions, and Light will be caught red-handed, and later killed. After L is confident he has Light cornered, L tests his deductive powers through a tennis match, and L and Light ultimately become friends: L believes Light, with his intelligence, would be helpful in the investigation; if Light really is Kira, then L would get closer to Kira; and if not, then Light would still be useful.
