Hogwarts Houses:

Hogwarts houses are assigned in the student's first year of entry, these are chosen by the sorting hat based on your general personality, they are divided into four and each has its own dormitories divided by years and gender, the houses are, Gryffindor: appreciates bravery, disposition, courage and chivalry. Ravenclaw: seeks intelligent students who are creative, curious and always looking for the answer. Slytherin: characterized by ambition and cunning. Hufflepuff: accepts whoever wants to belong to their house and praises loyalty and honesty.

Hogwarts 1:

The building, situated in the hills of Scotland, is regarded as an ancient ruined building with a sign reading "Caution, dangerous ruins" by non-magical people (more commonly known as Muggles). It has seven floors, several towers, staircases that change position at will, and extensive grounds containing a lake, a forest, called The Forbidden Forest, and several greenhouses for botanical purposes. In addition to its numerous classrooms where classes in Potions, Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, History of Magic and other subjects are taught by qualified assistants, the castle has places with different purposes. Examples include the Great Hall (where huge banquets are held on special days and which has a magical ceiling which appears to be the sky and displays the weather at the time), the common rooms, a large library, the mysterious Room of Requirement or the legendary Chamber of Secrets, where the famous wizard Harry Potter defeated the dark wizard Lord Voldemort for the second time and killed a basilisk using the sword of Gryffindor, when he was only in his second year. Many hidden passages, staircases and moving painting portraits with a life of their own make the tour of the castle worrying for the most confused students, and exciting for the most curious. For over a thousand years, students were sorted upon arrival into the various houses by the verdict of the Sorting Hat, with the surnames of the school's four founders: Gryffindor, where the brave of heart go; Hufflepuff, where the hard-working, honest, animal- and nature-loving students attend; Ravenclaw, where the intelligent and wise belong; and Slytherin, where the bold and ambitious belong. During Harry's schooling, Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster and the main heads of house are Professors McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick and Snape (later replaced by Professor Flitwick).

by Slughorn).

A student's education takes place over seven years, beginning his or her studies at the earliest at eleven and leaving school at the earliest at seventeen.

Internal history:

Over a thousand years ago, wizards suffered from misunderstanding and fear at the hands of Muggles. Four exceptionally talented wizards decided to found a school of magic, around the year 992, to offer a refuge to persecuted wizards and pass on their knowledge.[b 1] Thus, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin set up the school in a castle and then went in search of people with the necessary skills to teach magic to future students. The school motto is: Draco dormiens Nunquam Titillandus[1] ("Never tickle a sleeping dragon"). In history, the name Hogwarts comes from the inspiration of Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founders of the school, after a dream she had where a warty pig led her to the cliff where the castle would be built, but it was Helga Hufflepuff who would gather people to build the entire building. The four founders' main opinions on the selection of students and subjects to be taught quickly began to differ, most notably between Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin, and tensions began to arise. The school was then divided into four separate houses. In order to choose as fairly as possible which house each student would be sent to, Godric Gryffindor cast a spell on his hat, renamed the "Sorting Hat", and each of the founders donated a part of their mind and personality to help the hat sort out the students at the beginning of their first year during the sorting ceremony.

The school and its location:

Hogwarts is located in the Scottish Highlands. The school is protected by numerous enchantments and spells that make it impossible for Muggles to find. Instead, Muggles only see ruins and signs of danger.

The existence of the Hogwarts Express allows all registered students to board it at King's Cross Station in London in order to reach the station in the village of Hogsmeade, which is right next to the school. It is the only authorized means of access for all students. Wizards are not allowed to "Apparate" (i.e. teleport) onto the Hogwarts grounds, in order to make the school less vulnerable. However, it is possible that the Headmaster will lift the enchantment for a limited time or only in certain areas of the castle, to allow students to practice Apparition. a large, forbidding-looking mountaintop castle[a 1], with towers, battlements[5] and corridors everywhere. Like the Burrow, the Weasley home, it is not a building that Muggles can build, as it is filled with magic.[5] Some staircases within the castle move from level to level, such as the Grand Staircase, and access to certain rooms is via animated portraits.

Places in Hogwarts 1:

As the name suggests, this is the first room you enter. The hall is huge (you could build an entire house in it) and its ceiling is invisible as it is so high. Torches are attached to the walls and the floor is made of stone slabs. Niches are carved into the walls and contain large hourglasses filled with jewels that count the points earned by the different houses for each good deed. The Great Hall: This huge hall serves the rooms' lunch, exams, reception for ceremonies and a place of refuge in case of alerts. Its very high ceiling reproduces the mood of the real sky (snowflakes falling without touching the students, rain, blue sky, clouds...). The four large tables (one for each house of the school) are lined up next to each other, facing the main table and the headmaster. This is a cozy place where all students and teachers can attend, especially at every meal. All festivals are held in this hall (Christmas, New Year banquet, first year distribution ceremony, Halloween, dance, etc.). At every ceremony, the Great Hall features a different layout. Common rooms: The Gryffindor common room is an intimate room with warm colors (red and gold). It is filled with carpets covering the floor, chairs and soft sofas around the fireplace. The windows are high up and the room is always well lit. A charm prevents boys from entering the girls' dormitory, although there is no spell to prevent the reverse (it is the same in the other houses only with the representative colors of each corresponding house and with a different design and location).

Places in Hogwarts 2:

The Hufflepuff common room is accessed through a painting (depicting a still life) near the kitchen. It has a comfortable, cozy light. There are lots of yellow curtains on the walls and big armchairs. Small underground tunnels lead to the girls' and boys' dormitories. All the doors are circular, like barrel lids. This architecture is reminiscent of the cozy round-doored houses of the Shire hobbits in the world of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The Ravenclaw House common room is located in the west wing of the castle.[h 4] To participate, students must correctly answer a question posed by a knocker in the shape of an eagle.[g 1] It is a large, airy space, with circular arched windows and blue silks and brass on the walls. The windows look out onto the surrounding mountains. The ceiling is covered in a dome painted with stars that are reflected in the floor. There are plenty of tables, chairs, and a library so that Ravenclaw students always have books available. A white marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw stands in a niche opposite the entrance to the common room, and next to the dormitory door. Slytherin students are housed in the basement of the castle. Their common room is accessed through the dungeons. To enter, a password must be provided and a hidden door in a bare, damp wall opens. It is a long underground room with stone walls and ceiling.[h 5] Round lamps hang from the ceiling, illuminating the room with a greenish hue. There is also a carved fireplace and comfortable sofas and armchairs. The light is always green, as it is located just beneath the Hogwarts lake.

Places in Hogwarts 3:

Professor Dumbledore's office: The room is guarded by a large stone statue that moves when the person speaks the correct password (usually a confectionery name for wizards). The statue then releases a spiral staircase that rotates out of the ground for the visitor to ascend. This staircase leads to a single oak door with a knocker in the shape of a griffin. Dumbledore's office is a large circular room lit by tall windows. The walls are covered with paintings of the former headmasters and headmistresses of Hogwarts, who sleep and snore in its frame most of the time. Fawkes the phoenix takes up residence on his perch to the left of the entrance. The few tables are covered with small, fragile instruments. Behind the headmaster's office, a glass case is visible in which the Sword of Gryffindor and the Pensieve are placed. The Sorting Hat is placed on a shelf just outside.

The library: The library is very large, with many wooden shelves filled with thousands of ancient books and grimoires of witchcraft. The forbidden section of the library is separated from the other by a rope section and contains books of black magic, only sixth and seventh year students are allowed to visit without permission from a teacher. However, in the fourth year of Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter with the permission of Professor McGonagall study some spell books to help Harry in the second round of Goblet of Fire. [d 1] Harry, Ron and Hermione also had the opportunity to borrow the manual superpower potions with the permission of Professor Lockhart. [b 3] In the second year. This is all in this book the three friends find the recipe for Polyjuice that allows them to get answers about the Chamber of Secrets. Hermione frequently does research.

There are numerous wooden chairs and tables and tables with low-key lamps.

Places in Hogwarts 4:

light. It is a very quiet place where students can isolate themselves to study. Madame Pince, the librarian, forbids any gossip or snacks in the room.

Defense Against the Dark Arts Room: The decor of this classroom changes every year, as the year is taught by a different teacher. Visitors encounter particularly strange specimens from the school year when Remus Lupin teaches. The Quidditch pitch is visible from the window of the teacher's desk. This is an office that Harry knows as he was frequently kindly invited in by Professor Lupin in his third year. Divination room Professor Trelawney's classroom is located at the top of the castle's north tower. This is a rather stuffy room[h 6] decorated as a sort of attic that students access through a small door. Round tables are arranged as if in a tea room, surrounded by comfortable chairs and ottomans. Because the curtains are always closed, the dim light only reaches the individual lamps on each table. The shelves against the circular walls are filled with crystal balls and teacups.

The dungeons This is where Severus Snape, the Potions Master, teaches his subject during Harry Potter's first five years of study. His office is also located here. Access to the dungeons is via the entrance hall, taking the opposite direction from the Great Hall, and via a dark staircase. In Snape's office, the walls are lined with shelves on which rest glass jars containing coloured and repulsive substances. At the back of the desk is a locked cupboard[h 8] containing gillyweed (useful to Harry in his fourth year for diving into the depths of the lake during the Triwizard Tournament), the horn of the bicorne and the skin of the African tree snake.

Places in Hogwarts 5:

(including Hermione who in her second year uses it to prepare Polyjuice Potion).

The kitchens: They are located in the basement. To enter, one must tickle the pear painted on a painting[i 6] depicting a large silver bowl filled with fruit. The kitchens are located just below the Great Hall and are exactly the same size as the latter, with four large tables arranged in the same way, for the house-elves, skilled chefs, to prepare the dishes and present them on the kitchen tables, before sending them to the tables in the Great Hall, passing through the roof.[h 5] The walls are covered in copper utensils. There is also a brick fireplace. The kitchen is provided by the Hogwarts house-elves. The elves provide a wide variety of food and drink for all meals. The food is largely typically British (roast beef, chicken, pork and lamb chops, sausages, bacon, meats, gratins, stir-fries, chips, mixed vegetables, ketchup[a 3]…), although the school occasionally makes exceptions (during the Triwizard Tournament, foreign dishes, such as bouillabaisse,[d 2] were served in honour of the host schools). The most common drinks served (except water) are orange juice and pumpkin juice. The house-elves also gladly offer the students rare foods from the kitchens.

Nursing It is a large, well-lit room, cool with white stone walls. Sick or injured students stay here for a few days, under the care of comfortable beds and Madam Pomfrey, separated from each other by screens. The infirmary is at the back of the room, so students entrusted to it can always be kept under surveillance.

Places in Hogwarts 6:

The Owlery The owlery is located at the top of the west tower on the fifth floor. The numerous untiled windows (so that owls can come and go with the mail) are arranged around the large circular stone-walled room, which rises to the top of the tower.[h 9] The floor is covered with straw, owl dung, and dead rodents.

The trophy room This is the room where all the awards for the students are stored. There are various medals, including most notably those won by Tom Marvolo Riddle during his schooling at Hogwarts.[h 10] The room is filled with glass display cases containing many gold, silver or bronze badges, plaques, bowls and statuettes.

Chamber of Secrets The legend of the Chamber of Secrets, mentioned by Professor Binns in the second year[b 4] (Minerva McGonagall in the film), explains that Salazar Slytherin would sit in the castle a secret room containing a monster that would supposedly release his heir to rid the school of children from Muggle families, to complete Salazar Slytherin's "task".

Harry discovers that the Heir of Slytherin is none other than Voldemort (then known under his real name: Tom Riddle), who terrorized the school fifty years before the opening of the Chamber of Secrets and released the giant snake that killed a student: Moaning Myrtle. [b 5] The school was about to close, but Riddle, who had great influence due to his intelligence and exemplary discipline, accused Rubeus Hagrid of opening the Chamber, but later retracted.

The Chamber of Secrets is opened again in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: it is through Tom Riddle's diary and in his use of Ginny Weasley, that Voldemort tries to finish his task by releasing the basilisk again. Harry discovers the entrance to the room in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, and enters it using Parseltongue to

trigger the opening mechanism and is confronted by the memory of Tom Riddle and his monster. He manages to kill the basilisk with the help of Fawkes and the sword of Gryffindor, with which he destroys the horcrux, which was Riddle's diary, and saves Ginny.[b 7]

It is a long, dimly lit underground room[b 8] accessed by sliding open the plumbing from Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. Its high ceiling is supported by stone columns around which are carved coiled snakes in a green, haunting atmosphere.[b 8] The carved snakes have sunken eyes, giving the visitor the strange impression that they are following him with his movements.[b 8] At the back of the room, on the wall, is a huge statue of Salazar Slytherin.[b 8] It stands at the foot of the statue where Harry found Ginny lying on the floor. Room of Requirement "Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not, but when it's there, it still contains what we want."[e 4](Dobby about the Room of Requirement) The Room of Requirement, also called the "Go and Fair" game by the Hogwarts house-elves, is a magical part of the school that the user can enter only if he or she really needs to. It is located on the seventh floor and the entrance is invisible: to make it appear, the user must pass three times before the blank wall, thinking hard about what he or she wants.[e 5] Several residents of the school voluntarily or accidentally use the room on request. This is the case of Professor Dumbledore, who said he found the toilet, Fred and George Weasley were able to hide there when they were the size of a broom cupboard, Dobby, who used to put Winky to sleep when he was drunk, or Voldemort, who hid there the lost diadem of Ravenclaw, transformed into a Horcrux.

About the room of requirement:

Characteristics:

The Room of Requirement is unable to conjure food - nothing and no one can, because food is the first major exception to Gamp's Law of Elemental Metamorphosis.[g 6] However, if the user requires food, the room reveals a secret passage to a place where it may be possible to obtain it. For example, in the seventh year, the room opened a passage to the Hog's Head Inn in Hogsmeade village.[e 6] If the requests ask the user to hide something, then the room reveals the full contents, laid out in disarray, in a room as large as a cathedral.

Hogwarts 8 Places:

Moaning Myrtle's Bath:

These are the oldest of the girls' bathrooms, on the second floor. They are no longer used because Myrtle was found dead the year the Chamber of Secrets was first opened. Since then, the ghost has never left this place. It is a sad room with a splintered sink. Above it is a large broken mirror that no one has bothered to fix and the floor is always wet or flooded. The entrance to the Chamber of Secrets is behind the single sink which has a snake or a tap embedded in it. It is here that the basilisk enters and leaves the Chamber of Secrets in the second year without anyone seeing it.

The prefects' bathroom:

Prefects share a bathroom that is reserved for them with the captain of each house's Quidditch team. Harry was therefore officially admitted in sixth grade, even though he had already used it two years ago to find a clue in the Triwizard Tournament. Myrtle later revealed to him how to find the index of the golden eggs, won for completing the first task of the tournament.

The password to access this bathroom is located in the fourth year "fresh pine". The bathtub is a large rectangular pool located on the floor. It is surrounded by a hundred taps pouring scented water.

Hogwarts 9 Locations:

Outdoor park edit Hogwarts School has a large park with sloping lawns, flower and vegetable beds, a lake, a large "forbidden" forest, several greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a Quidditch pitch.

On the first day of school, students arrive by car in front of a large wrought-iron gate flanked by statues of winged boars. This portal has been enchanted by Dumbledore to prevent any attempt at intrusion. Notably located on the grounds of Hogwarts is the Whomping Willow, an enchanted tree that was planted the year James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew arrived at Hogwarts,[c 2] which slams its branches into anyone who strays too close to it. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley accidentally landed in this tree when they flew in by car in their second year.[b 10] The tree contains a secret passage beneath the largest root of the tree, which leads via an underground tunnel to the Shrieking Shack in the neighbouring village of Hogsmeade.[c 3] This passage was used by the Marauders during Remus Lupin's transformations into a werewolf to get away from the other students who might cause him injury. The lake is inhabited by many creatures. In the early years, students can see a giant squid protruding from the surface of the water to warm its tentacles. This is a harmless animal, which also brought a first-year student (Denis Creevey) to the surface when he fell off his boat across the lake.[d 4] When Harry had to dive into the water during the second round of the Triwizard Tournament in the fourth grade, he discovered that the lake is inhabited by mermaids, mermen, and grindylows as well.

Hogwarts Places 10:

Hagrid's Hut Harry, Ron, and Hermione regularly visit Rubeus Hagrid who lives in a small wooden cottage outside the castle on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Sometimes they even go there at night wearing Harry's Invisibility Cloak. The cottage consists of a sitting room,[a 4] with a large table and chairs, a bed, a chest of drawers, and a fireplace. A second door leads to the back of the cottage where Hagrid has built a small garden, where he grows giant pumpkins.[c 4] During Hagrid's first year, he attempts to breed a dragon, which he names Norbert. In their second year, Harry and Ron witness, hidden under the cloak, Hagrid's arrest and Dumbledore's temporary return. [b 11] In the third year, they encountered the rat Scabbers that Ron believed dead, and later, taking advantage of Hagrid's absence, Harry and Hermione took refuge with the hippogriff Buckbeak to escape from Remus Lupin transformed into a werewolf. [c 5] During the sixth year, Harry goes with Hagrid to the funeral of Aragog, a giant spider, and using the felix felicis potion extracts vital information from Professor Slughorn in the fight against Voldemort. [f 2] The hut is burned by Death Eaters who escape unharmed, at the end of that year, although Harry and Hagrid manage to put it out.

Hogwarts Places 11:

Forbidden Forest The forest lies within the walls of Hogwarts. It is strictly forbidden to all students to enter it, except during the course of looking out for magical creatures or deductions (which are then accompanied by Hagrid). Among the plant species, there are tree species such as beech, oak, pine, sycamore and yew.[9] Although the forest is infinitely dense and wild, some paths and clearings allow for its identification. Hagrid, who frequently travels in the forest for various reasons, uses these paths. The forest is also home to stands of magical creatures:

a pack of centaurs, including Bane, Magorian, Ronan and Firenze;[a 5] a colony of Acromantulas: Aragog and his family[b 12] (until the Battle of Hogwarts, in volume 7); unicorns;[c 2] Grawp, a giant,[e 7] who lives in the forest after Harry's fifth year;[e 8] a herd of thestrals, horse-like creatures with bat-like wings. These creatures are visible only to the person who saw the death (such as Harry Potter, Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood). They are the ones who, in September, pull the carts to the castle. In the 5th volume, they were also used to go to the Ministry of Magic. The Forbidden Forest is the place where Harry sees Voldemort for the second time in his life, feeding on the blood of a dead unicorn to survive.[6] It is also the scene of his encounter with Aragog in his second year.

Hogwarts 12 Places:

Quidditch field This is where students can (outside of class hours) play or enjoy a match of Quidditch, the favourite sport of wizards. The stadium is surrounded by raised stands where spectators can set up to follow meetings, but also training. Two five-metre-high goalposts, with their highest point being large vertical rings, serve as goals.[a 7] The Quidditch pitch is not just for games. During the Triwizard Tournament, it is transformed into a 6-metre-high hedge maze, for the final event.

Hogwarts 13 Locations:

Secret passages edit There are seven secret passages in and out of the school. Argus Filch knows of only four, while Fred and George Weasley, all familiar with the Marauder's Map, offer them to Harry in his third year. The locations of some of them are not revealed. However, it is possible to note three that Fred and George tell Harry about:[c 6]

a passage under the Whomping Willow, leading to the Shrieking Shack: it was generally used in the days when James Potter and Sirius Black were at Hogwarts, when their friend Remus Lupin regularly transformed into a werewolf and they would secretly visit him in their animal form; a passage behind a mirror on a fourth floor, unusable due to a landslide; a passage behind a shutter in the witch's statue - leads to Honeydukes' cellar, a pre-Hogsmeade confectionery. To do this you need to wave your wand at the statue saying "dissendium"[10] and the witch starts to slide, thus freeing up a space large enough to move through. When you borrow this passage, Harry takes a long fall from a stone slide, then passes through a dirt path far enough to climb an uneven staircase with worn steps leading to the door to Honeydukes' cellar. Other passages are discovered by Harry, Ron and Hermione in the story such as the one leading to the Chamber of Secrets which only opens if Parseltongue is spoken into one of Moaning Myrtle's bathroom valves (this tap is adorned with a snake).

Sorting Ceremony 1 (to assign you a house for the remainder of your stay at Hogwarts):

When first-year students first arrive at the castle, they don't go straight to the Great Hall to begin the welcoming feast, but instead must go to the Sorting, an important ceremony. Students at Hogwarts are divided into four houses, each named after one of the school's original founders (Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin, respectively). As Minerva McGonagall said in The Philosopher's Stone:

«House sorting is a very important ceremony because while you are here, your house will be like your family at Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend your free time in your house common room.» The Sorting ceremony at Hogwarts takes place in the Great Hall, and all students as well as teachers are invited. After a short speech by the Headmaster or Headmistress, the first-year students wait in lines to be called out, in alphabetical order, by name. The Sorting Hat, which looks like an old, patched hat, first sings a song,[a 10] explaining its functions and describing the qualities of the different houses. The song is never the same, and varies from year to year depending on events.[note 5] Each first-year student then proceeds in alphabetical order and sits on a stool. Professor McGonagall places the Sorting Hat on the student, which takes a few seconds or minutes to complete a brief psychological analysis of the student and determine his or her aptitude, then loudly announces the house to which the student belongs throughout his or her schooling.

Sorting Ceremony 2 (to assign you a house for the remainder of your stay at Hogwarts):

Since the hat sorts students according to their personality, the children of a family do not always end up in the same house, as is the case of Sirius Black who was sorted into Gryffindor despite his entire family having been Slytherin, or Parvati and her twin sister Padma Patil, into Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, respectively.[i 12]

When faced with difficulties in choosing a house, the Hat may argue with the student in question in order to get his or her opinion. This was what happened in determining Harry Potter's house. The Sorting Hat had detected qualities of both Slytherin and Gryffindor in him, but after Harry's explicit reluctance to the former, it decided to send him to Gryffindor.[a 11] Another case was with Minerva McGonagall, Filius Flitwick and Hermione Granger, who could have been sent to Gryffindor or Ravenclaw.[a 3]

The houses are named after their creator's surname, and are as follows: Gryffindor, whose colours are scarlet and gold and whose symbol is a lion; Slytherin, whose colours are green and silver and whose symbol is a snake; Ravenclaw, whose colours are blue and bronze and whose symbol is an eagle (a raven in the films); and Hufflepuff, whose colours are yellow and black and whose symbol is a badger.

Rivalry and Manechism:

As the story is told from the point of view of Harry Potter (a Gryffindor), the traditional rival Slytherin students are portrayed in a very pejorative light: that they are idiots, rude, and often ugly. Dumbledore's Army includes students from several houses, but does not include any Slytherins in its ranks. There is one notable exception to this correspondence between Slytherin and the forces of evil revealed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Severus Snape, Potions major, does not share the idea that pure-blood wizards are superior to others. He admired and loved Lily Evans, Harry's mother, for her talent in potion-making, and came from a Muggle family. Despite his willingness to associate with high-ranking people and boasting of having long arms, Snape appears warm and welcoming.

This Manichaeism between Gryffindor and Slytherin could provide a disadvantage in the Harry Potter series,[12] which presents complex themes and yet refuses a simplistic application of good versus evil. However, it has been reduced in the last 14 volumes, especially in the last few chapters, where Slytherin House and some of its members are put in a more interesting light: Severus Snape turns around and stays out of the Order of the Phoenix, in the name of his love for Harry's mother, Lily Evans, and secretly helps her son in his mission to destroy Voldemort.

Personal de Hogwarts 1:

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as at all other schools, courses are taught by teachers. Most teachers are wizards, but occasionally a centaur[i 13] or a ghost may be employed.[i 14] Teachers are recruited by the headmaster of the school,[f 5] who may also return, as the case of Dolores Umbridge shows. The position of professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts has a reputation for being "cursed" since Dumbledore refused to appoint Tom Riddle.[f 6] Since, in this sense, teachers are successful and remain in their position for the entire school year.

Some teachers may have additional distinctions. The most prominent element is the headmaster. In Harry Potter's education, the role of headmaster is provided by Albus Dumbledore most of the time. The headmaster is assisted by a vice-headmaster, this role being performed by Minerva McGonagall for Harry's schooling. Another prestigious position is being the head of one of the houses, charged with the discipline and responsibilities of his or her house, as is the case for the four recurring characters: Minerva McGonagall[i 8] for Gryffindor, Pomona Sprout[i 9] for Hufflepuff, Filius Flitwick[i 10] for Ravenclaw, and Severus Snape[i 11] for Slytherin.

Personal de Hogwarts 2:

School life 1:

Registration and welcome edit Every witch and wizard in the United Kingdom is registered from birth until entry to Hogwarts, thanks to a magical quill located at the school that detects the birth of a magical child and writes his or her name on a long parchment. [15] During the summer, a teacher (in recent years, Professor Minerva McGonagall) sees this parchment, and wizards who reach the age of 11 before 31 August of the current year are contacted by owl to inform them of their enrolment[Note 7] and send them a list of uniform clothing, textbooks, and required materials. Confirmation or denial of enrolment must be returned to the school by 31 July. Prospective students must purchase their supplies before school starts, most often from Diagon Alley, a hidden street off Charing Cross Road in London. Students who cannot afford such materials may receive financial aid from the school, as was the case for young orphan Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort) when he was a Slytherin student. Textbooks and school supplies requested in the registration The Standard Book of Spells (Class 1) Miranda Goshawk A History of Magic, Bathilda Bagshot Magical Theory, Adalbert Waffling Beginner's Guide to Transformations, Emeric Switch A Thousand Herbs and Magical Mushrooms, Phyllida Spore Magic Filters and Potions, Arsenius Jigger Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection, Quentim Trimble Supplies 1 magic wand 1 pewter cauldron (measure 2) 1 set of glass or crystal vials 1 telescope. 1 brass scale

School life 2:

Students may also bring an owl, a cat, a rat (or mouse) or a toad.

Letters for Muggle-borns, who may not be aware of their powers or familiar with the wizarding world, are delivered in person by wizards, who explain to parents all about wizarding society and convince them that it is not a hoax.

Each student is allowed to bring an owl, a toad, a mouse, or a cat to keep and care for at school. Most students prefer owls because they can deliver mail and so there is an owlery where they can be kept instead of in students' rooms, although owls are also found at Hogwarts which anyone can use to send mail. However, other animals have been seen as pets at Hogwarts, most notably Ron's rat, Scabbers, but Hermione's cat, Crookshanks, and Neville's toad, Trevor, have also been mentioned. The school year begins on 1 September. To get to the school, all students must go to London Kings Cross station on 1 September to board the Hogwarts Express at platform 9¾.[a 12] Platform 9 3/4 is invisible to Muggles. To get there, students (sometimes accompanied by their parents) must cross a barrier (a magical wall in the films) between platforms 9 and 10.[a 13] The train takes almost a full day to reach Hogsmeade station, right next to the school. During the journey, an old hag enters the carriages to sell sweets to the students,[a 14] such as Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, Sugar Quills, etc.

School life 3:

Upon arriving at Hogsmeade Station, first-year students are escorted by Rubeus Hagrid onto small boats, which (using magic) navigate across a lake to a grotto beneath Hogwarts Castle. Senior students travel to the castle in carriages that appear to be self-drawn but are actually pulled by thestrals, skeletal winged creatures that are invisible to wizards who have never seen death.

While second-year students and above have already arrived in the Great Hall for the banquet earlier this year, the newcomers arrive later, accompanied by the Deputy Headmistress, who has previously met in the entrance hall, to explain how the distribution of students into the different houses works throughout their schooling.

Uniform:

For reasons of equality and ease of integration within an institution, school uniform is very common in the UK. Virtually all public and private institutions have their uniform, or at least a strict dress code.

At Hogwarts, students are instructed[a 16] to wear full-sized black wizard robes, a pointed black hat, a pair of dragonskin gloves or similar, and a black winter cloak with silver clasps. Each item of clothing must be marked with the student's name. British students are often asked to wear a white shirt, black or blue trousers (or skirt), black shoes, a V-neck jumper with the school (or house) badge and a tie.

Prefects:

In the summer before the fifth year, two students are elected prefects, as is the case in all houses.[i 22] In the case of Gryffindor, these were Ron and Hermione. Prefects are given extra privileges (they have a carriage reserved for them on the Hogwarts Express, a bathroom, which has a bathtub, or pool, due to its large dimensions) and other responsibilities and remain prefects, unless they are made house prefects or stripped of their position, for the remainder of their school career. The house prefect is nominated by the seventh year students. It is possible to become house prefect without having previously been a prefect (Hagrid mentions that James Potter was made house prefect despite never having been a prefect). Prefects may deduct house points from other students for infractions but may not deduct points from other prefects. They may also impose punishments. Quidditch team captains also enjoy some of the privileges of prefects, such as permission to use their bathroom. They generally ensure compliance with regulations and escort first-year students to their halls on the evening of their arrival at Hogwarts.

Known prefects, by houses:

Prefects that Gryffindor had and has: Albus Dumbledore Minerva McGonagall Lily Evans Remus Lupin Bill Weasley Charlie Weasley Percy Weasley Hermione Granger (now) Ron Weasley (now)

Prefects that Hufflepuff had and has: Cedric Diggory Hannah Abbott (now) Ernie Macmillan (now)

Prefects that Ravenclaw had and has: Penelope Clearwater Anthony Goldstein (now) Padma Patil (now)

Prefects that Slythering had and has: Tom Marvolo Riddle Lucius Malfoy Draco Malfoy (now) Pansy Parkinson (now)

The Inquisitorial Brigade:

The Inquisition Squad was founded by Professor Dolores Umbridge, This is an organization that aims to hinder Albus Dumbledore, on behalf of the Ministry of Magic, considering Dumbledore a madman since the end of the Triwizard Tournament. Dumbledore wants to publicize Voldemort's return, but the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, rejects this idea. As a result, Dumbledore and the students of Hogwarts are under close supervision to prevent any organization from going against the ideas of the Ministry.

Composed primarily of Slytherin students and Umbridge's appointed caretaker, Filch (including Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, and Pansy Parkinson), the Brigade allows members to have the same power over other students that Umbridge has - even over other teachers. As such, they can discipline other prefects. Brigade members are primarily responsible for reporting any suspicious activity by other students to Umbridge.

The Brigade has several powers,[i 23] such as removing or distributing points, distributing deductions, or opening students' packages and letters.

Punishments:

Apart from losing house points, serious disobedience at Hogwarts results in punishment.

According to the school's caretaker, Argus Filch, punishments meant various forms of torture until very recently, but now often involve assisting the staff or the school with various jobs and tasks. Enforcing the rules while out of class falls to the caretaker with the assistance of the prefects. A student's head of house usually has the final say when it comes to discipline. However, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dolores Umbridge, then High Inquisitor, had the power to punish more severely than any other punishments meted out by the school staff, as is the case for Harry Potter when Professor Umbridge decides to confiscate his Firebolt for the entire term for fighting with Draco Malfoy.

The cup of houses:

During the school year, the four houses compete for "house points". As a form of incentive or punishment, each student's achievements or failures—academic or disciplinary—cause their respective house to gain or lose points.[17] In the first book, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Neville Longbottom find themselves shunned by the other Gryffindor students for causing them to lose a significant amount of house points. The points are recorded by four large hourglasses in the school's foyer. For each point a student gains, a jewel of the house's color (rubies for Gryffindor, diamonds for Hufflepuff, sapphires for Ravenclaw, and emeralds for Slytherin)[21] will fall into the corresponding hourglass. At the end of each school year, the points are totaled, and the house with the most points wins the House Cup.

The addition or subtraction of points is automatically detected by magical terms and adjustments are made on the hourglass. When an authority figure reduces points, he must announce the cost of the reduction, otherwise the points will not be reduced. For example, when Inquisition Squad member Montague tried to reduce points for Fred and George Weasley, they locked him in the Vanishing Cabinet on the first floor before he could say the words and so the points were not reduced.

Houses also receive points for their performances in Quidditch, as seen in all of Harry's years at school except for his fourth year, where house matches are suspended due to the Triwizard Tournament.

A typical day 1:

The day begins with breakfast in the Great Hall. Students sit at their own house table (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin) and may eat and talk, play board games, or finish their homework. The head of each house eats with the other teachers at the large table set at the end of the hall, at which Dumbledore is also present, especially during ceremonies. During breakfast, owls bring mail to the students. It is usually a copy of the Daily Prophet, letters from parents or friends, or packages (Harry received his first broomstick this way). A bell signals the start of morning classes at 9:00.[c 7]

There are two classes in the morning with a short break between each so that students can get to the next class. The bell rings for lunch at noon. After lunch, classes resume at 1:00 p.m.[c 8] and end at 5:00 p.m. First-year students often have Friday afternoons off, while sixth- and seventh-year students have more free time during the week. In the evening, students take their meals in the Great Hall, after which they are supposed to be in the common room of their respective houses, with the exception of students who must take an astronomy course at midnight.

A typical day 2:

The four common rooms of the four houses are located behind pictures or walls that require a password (with the exception of the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room, where you are asked to answer a question or riddle[g 15] and the Hufflepuff common room, where you have to touch a barrel). Inside the common room there are sofas and chairs for the students as well as tables and there are also fireplaces to keep the rooms warm. Students relax here in the evenings or complete their homework. There are bulletin boards in each common room as well as at strategic points around the school. Each house has two bedrooms: one for the ladies (they have a trap door so that only the girls can go up because if a gentleman goes up, the stairs turn into a slide, and he rolls down to the entrance of the stairs) and one for the gentlemen. Each student sleeps in a long four-poster bed with a canopy and house-colored bedspreads and thick white pillows. There is a nightstand for each bed and each bedroom has a jug of cold water with glasses on a tray.

Courses and exams:

Since Hogwarts is a wizarding school, students are not taught classes such as math or grammar; they are expected to have a good grasp of these before entering school. Before going to Hogwarts, most wizarding children are either home-schooled or attend muggle schools, especially if they are muggle-born.

In the series, many courses are described. Some are compulsory from the first year of study, such as Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Herbology, etc. At the end of the second year, students have to choose at least two other optional subjects.

Mandatory courses: Astronomy Defense Against the Dark Arts Enchantments Herbology History of Magic transformations flight potions

Optional Courses: Guessing Arithmancy Care of Magical Creatures Muggle Studies Studies of ancient runes At the end of their fifth year, students take the Ordinary Magical Qualifications (OWL) examinations for all subjects in which they are enrolled. Each examination consists of a written test of knowledge and, where appropriate, a practical demonstration of skills before a panel of Ministry of Magic proctors. Students who achieve a high enough O.W.L. in a particular subject are allowed to take its corresponding advanced course during the following two years, in preparation for the N.E.W.T.s given at the end of their seventh year.

In English, OWL is short for Ordinary Wizardry Level. 'Owl' means owl. And NEWT is short for Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test. 'Newt' means newt.

Holidays and weekends:

The Hogwarts school year is structured similarly to other "non-magical" schools in the United Kingdom, with three terms punctuated by holidays at Christmas and Easter. The year begins on the first of September, and the summer break ends in late June, with an eight to nine week break before the start of a new school year. Students may choose to stay at Hogwarts during the Christmas season. Those who choose to stay at the castle do not have extra classes, attend a feast on Christmas Day, and are free to roam around the castle. During the winter break, these students have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas with the teachers in the Great Hall.[c 9]

Aside from summer, Easter, Christmas, and weekends, students have classes every other day of the year. There are usually four feasts a year, the beginning of the year or welcoming feast and the end of the year or farewell feast, as well as feasts for Halloween and Christmas. In Harry's fourth year, there was a fifth feast to celebrate the beginning of the Triwizard Tournament. Also, in Harry's second year, Professor Lockhart decided to celebrate Valentine's Day, much to the chagrin of the other teachers and a number of male students.

On special weekends, Hogwarts students from their third year onwards, with signed permission slips, are allowed to go to the nearby village of Hogsmeade, where they can relax and enjoy the bars, restaurants and shops. There seems to be a good relationship between the school, the village and the students who get on well with the locals. Favourite places in Hogsmeade include Honeydukes sweet shop, Zonko's joke shop, clothing stores such as Gladrags, the Shrieking Shack (rumoured to be the most haunted building in Britain, making it a tourist attraction), the Three Broomsticks pub and the Hog's Head club.

Temporary meetings:

Dumbledore's Army:

Dumbledore's Army (often abbreviated ED) is a secret organisation founded by Harry Potter, based on an idea by Hermione Granger, to teach his fellow witches how to deal with dangerous situations in terms of defence against the Dark Arts and to counteract the policies of the Ministry of Magic and the teachings of Dolores Umbridge.

Club of the Eminences:

The Slug Club is a club formed at Hogwarts by Horace Slughorn, on two occasions, when he was Potions professor. Slughorn selected his members from among the most promising students, celebrities or famous children or children of his favorite former students, and organized them with parties, dinners, the aim of which is to create a network of contacts. And he also said that all of Harry's friends were his friends which means that Professor Slughorn loved Harry very much.

Contestants have included, in the past, the editor of the Daily Prophet, the owner of Honeydukes candy shop, Lily Evans, Rodolphus Lestrange, Lucius Malfoy and Tom Riddle (Lord Voldemort). In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Slughorn recruits (among others) Harry Potter, Cormac McLaggen, Blaise Zabini, Ginny Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom.

Extracurricular Events and Activities 1:

Quidditch matches:

Each year at Hogwarts, the Quidditch Tournament is organised between the four houses. During the year, six matches are held (except during Harry's fourth year, for the Triwizard Tournament). The house that wins the most matches wins the Quidditch Cup and is allowed to contribute more points to their house towards the House Cup at the end of the year.

The Triwizard Tournament:

This tournament is an event that has become rare over the centuries and was first held 700 years ago.[d 10] It includes the three largest wizarding schools in the world: Beauxbatons (France), Durmstrang (located in Northern Europe), and Hogwarts (Great Britain). These two schools compete against Hogwarts, even during Harry's fourth year.

This tournament consists of three dangerous, even life-threatening tasks. Three wizards or witches are selected at the start of the tournament by the Goblet of Fire (one student selected for each school). Students who wish to participate in the tournament must write their name on a piece of parchment and drop it into the cup before the day of selection. These students must be at least 17 years old.

Against all odds, Harry Potter (then only 14 years old) is selected for the Goblet of Fire, along with the three regular entrants, despite not having entered his name into the Goblet.[d 11]

Competitors selected for the Hogwarts Goblet of Fire Victor Krum (Durmstrang) Fleur Delacour (Beauxbatons) Cedric Diggory (Hogwarts) Harry Potter (Hogwarts)

Extracurricular Events and Activities 2:

The winner of the tournament wins a scholarship of one thousand galleons and the "Triwizard Cup". During this tournament the Yule Ball also takes place, a tradition based on International Magical Cooperation, seeing "an excellent way to build relationships between young witches and wizards of different nationalities".[d 10]This tournament has become very rare and would not have taken place after a century[d 12] due to the number of victims being too high.[d 10]

Description of events Dragon Trial: The champions must retrieve a golden egg guarded by a dragon.[i 25] This egg, once retrieved, is revealed to be a key to solving the next trial: finding a way to stay underwater for an hour to become well[d 13] (they don't even know how well that is). If the champion cannot retrieve the egg, they cannot continue with the tournament due to the egg containing vital information for the future. Lake Trial: Champions must retrieve their friend(s) or family member from the bottom of the lake at Hogwarts as quickly as possible, avoiding hostile underwater creatures. They have up to one hour. Trial of the Labyrinth: The champions must find their way through a giant maze, filled with puzzles and obstacles of all kinds to stop them from continuing on their way.[d 14] The first to reach the Triwizard Trophy at the center of the maze is the winner of the tournament. The winner of the previous task has an advantage over other competitors, as he is the first to enter the maze. To make a long story short, Harry Potter won and Cedric Diggory died, this happened in the fourth year of school.

Extracurricular Events and Activities 3:

The dueling club:

The Duelling Club was established at Hogwarts by the second-year Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. The idea, which was primarily a pretext for the professor to boast about his supposed exploits to his fans, has proven useful in teaching the students some defensive spells and enabling them to deal with eventual aggression,[b 14] in the wake of the events surrounding the opening of the Chamber of Secrets.

Armed with their wands, students can compete in a friendly duel, under the supervision of Professor Lockhart and Professor Snape, on a candle-lit golden dais temporarily set up in the Great Hall.[b 14]

In these duels, Professor Snape teaches the students to use the Disarming Charm Expelliarmus,[b 15] used against Lockhart himself.
