Batman, in most of his incarnations, is a dark and brooding hero with a personal vendetta against crime and injustice. Psychologically traumatized by the death of his parents, Batman has sworn to rid Gotham of the criminal elements that took his parents from him. He is extremely pessimistic and distrustful, often making it difficult for him to trust people other than Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Lucius Fox, the Robins, or the Batgirls. Despite this, Batman has shown to have a great love for humanity, which was instilled in him by his parents. His father was a doctor, while his mother was a crusader against child abuse. In fact, Batman's oath of vengeance is tempered by the greater ideal of justice. He refrains from killing, as he feels that it would not make him better than the criminals he fights. He is also a very prominent member of the Justice League and the founder of the Outsiders. To protect his secret identity, Batman has constructed a fake persona that he can use as his civilian identity. To the world at large, Bruce Wayne is a self-absorbed and irresponsible playboy and philanthropist. Only his closest allies know that this attitude is just an act. It is implied that he also considers Batman his true identity and that his civilian identity was essentially an alter ego as a result of having to watch his parents get shot to death.

The suit is predominantly dark gray or black, with shades ranging from bluish gray to matte black. This symbolizes the darkness of the night and the gloomy nature of the character. The suit is made of strong and durable materials such as Kevlar, Nomex and metal plates. This allows Batman to withstand blows, bullets and other attacks. The cowl is one of the most iconic elements of Batman's suit. It is pointed and bat-shaped, and covers almost Batman's entire head, hiding his identity. The cape is another iconic element of the suit. It is long and fluid, and allows Batman to glide and move quickly. Batman's logo is a stylized bat found on the chest of the suit. It is a symbol of the character and represents his fight against crime. The utility belt is a wide belt that contains a variety of tools and weapons that Batman uses to fight crime. The boots are tall and sturdy, and give Batman stability and protection on his feet.
