After the last Defence Against the Dark Arts (DADA) teacher died at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, Dumbledore needed a new assigned person for the job, and instead of Snap (who had wanted that job for years) he chose Gilderoy Lockhart. Which is why Severus Snape despises Lockhart. Students swoon over the new professor's aura and charisma, which he usually, and strangely, reacts back in his same, charismatic demeanor.

He is extremely narcissistic, and self-proclaimed. He bases his entire existence on him, which is what miraculously gets him successful in his life. He is also very charming. And annoying. He's not actually that good at spells other than charms, like the obliviation charm. He can also lose his temper with someone really easily when it's just one person and him.
