He was wrongly accused of the mass murder of 12 Muggles by Peter Pettigrew and was sent to Azkaban prison. After 12 years of imprisonment, he managed to escape.

Peter Pettigrew (1960 – March/April 1998) – the fourth creator of the Marauder's Map, one of the former school friends of James Potter, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, a former Gryffindor, and a servant of Voldemort.

During the First Wizarding War, Peter was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, but became a spy when he was forced to join Lord Voldemort. He was appointed Secret Keeper of the Potters when they went underground, and betrayed James, his wife Lily, and their son Harry to Lord Voldemort.

Peter spent 12 years living in his Animagus form as the Weasley family's pet rat Scabbers. However, his identity was discovered by Sirius and Remus in 1994, and Pettigrew, with nowhere else to go, sought protection by returning to the service of Lord Voldemort.

Pettigrew played a key role in Voldemort's return and continued to serve him during the Second Wizarding War.
