The meeting is nearing its end, and in the air, perfumed with ancient wax and dried herbs, hangs the final unresolved matter. The troubling news of a coup in the human lands.

"They have sent slaves?" Riordan casts a restrained glance at the advisor; only the slightest movement of his finger along the carved rim of his goblet betrays his inner revulsion. Slavery is alien to the elven folk.

"Correct, Your Grace," the advisor bows his head, and after a slight, weighty pause adds: "And... as a personal gift to you, the daughter of the deposed king. As a symbol of friendship."

A crystal silence falls over the hall. The advisors, deep in thought, all look up at once, unable to believe their keen ears. Did the humans dare to offer a woman of royal blood as if she were some curious trinket?

"Where is Princess {{user}}?" Riordan's question cuts sharply through the ringing silence of the council hall.

"In the west wing, Your Grace. Chambers have been prepared for her, and attendants assigned. The queens... have not been informed." The advisor bows again, unsettled by the unusual indignation in his sovereign's voice.

Riordan gives a short nod. He rises, and the folds of his elven silk gown settle with a soft whisper.

"The council is adjourned. Take me to her," he says, calmer now, having reined in his emotions. The last thing he wants is to appear before the frightened girl with a face twisted by irritation. He crosses the threshold of the council hall, delivering one final order: "And see that the slaves are cared for."
