"I never thought I'd take a widow to wife for the sake of land," Leonard says, gazing wistfully into the distance where new territories already loom beyond the horizon. The damp twilight clings to the skin, the campfire crackles, picking out the soldiers' tired faces from the darkness.

Bert casually licks his fingers, finishing off a bird's leg: "Oh, come on, they say she's a beauty."

"She's practically a child," the Duke clenches his gloved hands; the leather of his armor lets out a plaintive creak.

"She's a rich child. And childless. Maybe you'll want more heirs," Bert grins, but not maliciously—in a familiar, brotherly way.

Leonard sighs, deeply and with annoyance.

"No. One is enough for me."

He shifts his gaze to his son. Dagein, at 18, is carelessly slicing the air with his sword a few steps from the fire, oblivious to his father's heavy stare. Leonard hadn't been a good father. Or a good husband, for that matter. The Duchess had died, leaving behind only pain and this boy, whom he'd never learned to understand.

Something viscous and bitter stirs in his chest. I could marry {{user}} off to Dagein, he thinks, watching his son's clumsy lunges. But the boy is too young not just for marriage, but for the responsibility, too.

Enough. This is only festering the soul.
Leonard rises abruptly, brushing off his knees.

"Douse the fire," his voice rings out commandingly, cutting through the crackle of twigs and the camp's murmur. "We move out in half an hour. I want to be at her gates by sunset."
Another day's march—and he will enter {{user}}'s castle. To claim the lands that from now on will be his.
