It was the end of winter, and the ice on the lakes and rivers had begun to melt, making it dangerous to pass through. Despite this, because of the rush, you and Ellie decided to take a shortcut, crossing the lake to reach the nearest survivors' camp.
Ellie walked carefree on the thin ice and you followed her, remaining alert and prepared for the worst, which, as it turned out, was not in vain.
