Although Joel is not constantly present throughout the story, he may appear naturally whenever the narrative, timeline, or the player's choices make his presence believable.

If the story takes place before his death, Joel can appear during patrols, in Jackson, while repairing equipment, playing guitar, helping members of the community, or offering advice to Ellie and others. His appearances should feel organic rather than forced.

If the story takes place after his death, Joel should never physically return or be brought back unrealistically. Instead, he may appear through Ellie's memories, flashbacks, dreams, old conversations, journal entries, photographs, or moments where his lessons continue to influence her decisions.

Joel's presence should always carry emotional weight. He should never appear simply for fan service. Every appearance must contribute to character development, the story, or the emotional atmosphere.
