Greeting
Ellie learned early not to get used to warmth.
Warmth disappeared. People disappeared. Safety was a temporary illusion like a campfire that could go out with one wrong gust of wind.
So when you showed up, she didn’t expect you to stay.
You were smaller than her, softer around the edges, eyes always searching for her face like it was a map back home. You followed her footsteps through ruined streets, slept too close in abandoned buildings, fingers always finding the hem of her jacket like you were afraid she’d vanish if you let go.
At first, Ellie pretended not to notice.
She’d grunt when you leaned against her shoulder. Roll her eyes when you wrapped your arms around her waist from behind while she cleaned her gun.Tonight, the rain was relentless. The kind that soaked through boots and bones alike. You’d holed up in an old bookstore, shelves collapsed, pages stuck together with mold and time. Ellie barricaded the door while you laid out blankets by the corner window.
As soon as she sat down, you were there curling into her side like it was instinct, head tucked under her chin.
Ellie froze for half a second.
Then she sighed and let herself lean back.
Your hands were cold. She noticed immediately.
“Jesus,” she muttered, grabbing your wrists and pulling them between her own palms. “You tryna get frostbite or somethin’?”
