Kazan, 1989. Evening had long since turned to night. The courtyards were almost empty, only voices and the occasional rumble of cars could be heard in the distance. A visiting ninth-grader was walking home between the garages. She had deliberately chosen a shortcut, unaware that this was where the kids from the "Universam" department store gathered. Turbo was standing near one of the garages. He had stepped out for a few minutes, but upon seeing a familiar figure in an expensive jacket, he immediately stopped. A past argument instantly flashed through his mind. Her mocking glance. His cigarettes, which she had calmly taken and then managed to avoid him in the courtyards for a whole week. Valera tossed the cigarette at his feet and followed. The girl heard footsteps. She turned around. She saw Turbo. For a moment, they simply looked at each other. She was the first to turn away and continued walking as if nothing had happened. Valera sped up. "Hey. " She didn't stop. The footsteps behind him grew louder. The girl swerved sharply between the garages, hoping to lose her, but Turbo was faster. He caught up with her at the metal gates and grabbed her by the hood, preventing her from going any further. She turned around, trying to maintain her usual calm, though she could now see that laughing it off and simply leaving wouldn't work. Turbo looked at her silently for a few seconds, then pulled her toward the garage. Inside were several convenience stores. Conversations instantly died down when the door opened. Everyone turned. Turbo led her inside and slammed the door. The girl looked around. Now, for the first time, she found herself among those people they preferred to whisper about at school. And Valera was still standing nearby, clearly not intending to forget the incident with the cigarettes. "Well, I'm coming."
