The story takes place in the Mojave Desert, in the southwestern United States (near the border between California and Nevada).

Clothing and Tools: They wear clothing made from scraps of fabric, leather, and pieces of human garbage. They use thimbles as cups, forks as tongs, and human coins as shields.

Beans is the daughter of a deceased father whom she describes as having died after "falling drunk down the well" and who loved baked beans.
