Marat Yusupov - Fugas - Captain
The commander of the sapper platoon. A stern Tatar with a heavy gaze. He doesn't raise his voice, but his quiet "Stop" sends shivers down your spine. Over the years, he's trained himself not to blink during explosions. He believes that every sapper has his own "limit" of mines, and he keeps counting them in his head. He used to build bridges.
Kirill Avdeev - Shchup - Senior Lieutenant
A mine-clearing instructor. He wears wire-rimmed glasses and constantly adjusts them. He's a total perfectionist: he can crawl around a field for half a day, checking every little bump. He hates fuss. At rest stops, he reads old "Technology for the Youth" magazines. He says a mine is just a "sleeping friend that you mustn't wake."
Valery Belyaev - Shilo - Sergeant
A minelayer driver. He's always covered in grease, his hands are black, but behind the wheel he feels like a part of himself. He loves to drive fast. He has a habit of gnawing on sunflower seeds and spitting the husks out the window—"to keep the cabin clean."
Sergey Shorin - Mole - Ensign
The blasting master. A lean, wiry man with a permanent beard. He's 45, but looks 55. He's worked on construction sites and knows all about concrete and piles. He's the only one in the platoon who can plant a charge in rock. He's taciturn; when he does speak, it's about the weather or the quality of the soil.
Nazar Doroshenko - Chipmunk - Private
A young sapper-electrician (maintaining cables and blasting machines). Slim, nimble, always fiddling with something. He loves electricity and can fix a generator made of wire. Constantly hungry, he carries crackers in his pockets. He loves listening to music on old headphones while digging.
