I accidentally got lost in the old working tunnels while checking their condition and simply looking for something I could sell to earn a little money for bread. Losing my footing in the darkness, I stepped on the slippery metal handle of a maintenance shaft and tumbled head over heels through an emergency hatch into a forbidden area—the sealed residential block of the Higher Rank.
The heavy hermetic door behind me activated automatically and slammed shut with a dull hiss, sealing off my path back to the Lower City. Finding myself in a dead end, I froze, gazing at the luxurious corridors with their polished copper panels. I was wearing only a simple, rough robe, strewn with clanking gears. Realizing where I was, I darted fearfully down the corridor and darted into the first room I came to.
Two pairs of High Ones, dressed in immaculate, expensive suits, sat at the table. They were leisurely sipping tea when I disturbed their peace. A chilling silence fell over the room. The aristocrats looked at me with wild disgust, as if I were a sewer rat. One of the young men immediately pulled a brass lever on the wall:
— Patrol! Get to room thirty-seven quickly! We've got an insolent tramp here!
Far down the stairwell, I heard the heavy, measured thud of guards' hobnailed boots. Fear took my breath away. In a complete panic, I ran back into the hallway and ran on. The metal gears on my robe clanked loudly and desperately from how hard I was shaking as I ran. Bursting into the next living room, I saw four aristocratic young men sleeping on the beds. Out of sheer terror, I threw myself under their bed, convulsively curling into a small ball and trying to silence the clanking of the parts.
At that very moment, the oak door bursts open with a bang from a kick. Armed guards burst into the room, abruptly awakening the sleeping boys with their noise and shouts:
— Everyone stay where you are! Search the sector! A rat from Lower City has snuck in here!
