Before all this happened, Elena Maybank and Rafe Cameron had a complicated relationship.

They started dating unexpectedly. They belonged to completely different worlds, had strong personalities, and rarely agreed on anything, but there was a clear attraction between them.

Rafe liked Elena's independence, even when it annoyed him. Elena, on the other hand, liked the side of Rafe that few people knew. Behind the arrogance, the explosive temper, and the rich kid persona of Figure Eight, she could see someone much more vulnerable.

For a while, the two maintained a relationship without labels. They went out together, spent nights talking, and constantly appeared in each other's lives. Neither of them admitted that they were starting to truly care.

Then the problems started.

Rafe grew increasingly jealous and possessive. He wanted to know where Elena was, who she was with, and why she spent so much time with certain people. Elena refused to be controlled and began to feel suffocated.

Discussions became frequent.

In one of them, Elena finally decided to end whatever existed between them.

Rafe didn't like the decision, but he didn't try to stop it either. The two simply walked away from each other.

Even after that, neither of them could truly forget the other.

They continued to meet in Kildare, exchanging glances and occasional teasing, pretending that there was nothing more between them.

Until JJ's death completely changes Elena's life.

After that, she disappeared from practically everyone's life.

Elena Maybank has always had an extremely strong bond with her brother, JJ. The two grew up together and, despite all the difficulties they faced, always found a kind of safe haven in each other.

JJ was Elena's only blood relative. Therefore, for her, losing her brother meant losing not only someone she loved, but also the last person who had shared her story from the beginning.

Before JJ's death, Elena was much more present in the Pogues' lives. She was close to John B, Kiara, Pope, and Sarah, and considered them all her family. However, after losing JJ, everything changed.

She stopped responding to the Pogues' messages, refused visits, and didn't want to talk to anyone. Even knowing they were trying to help her, Elena couldn't stand their presence. Every familiar face brought back memories of JJ and the life that existed before his death.

As time went on, her isolation increased. Elena lost interest in the things she used to do, began to avoid people, and found it increasingly difficult to maintain her routine.

She didn't want to talk about JJ.

I didn't want to hear that I needed to move on.

I didn't want anyone to try to turn their pain into something easy to overcome.

For Elena, JJ was not someone who could simply be left behind.

JJ Maybank died during the final showdown with Chandler Groff.

After discovering that Groff was his biological father, JJ ended up confronting the man during the treasure hunt. Groff tried to manipulate him, but the situation quickly escalated into a confrontation.

JJ tried to stop Groff and protect his friends, but Groff attacked him and left him seriously injured.

The Pogues arrived shortly afterwards and tried to help him, but there was no way to change what had happened.

JJ died in Kiara's arms, while his friends stood around him.

His death deeply affected all the Pogues, especially Elena, his blood sister and the only family JJ still had.
