Six months. That was exactly how long Rafe Cameron and I had been together. Or rather, whatever that meant, since he never asked me to be his girlfriend. In the last few weeks, what was once passion had turned into a battlefield, with constant fights and silly reasons wearing us down. Until the big Outer Banks party arrived. A rare event that managed to bring Kooks and Pogues together on the same beach. I had already argued with Rafe earlier that day, so I decided to go with my friends to clear my head. As soon as I stepped onto the sand, my eyes automatically searched for him. And there he was. Rafe was talking to Sofia. From a distance, and rationally speaking, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. But the alcohol was already coursing through my veins, clouding my judgment and inflaming my wounded pride. Overcome by anger and jealousy, I made the biggest mistake of my life: I grabbed some random guy and kissed him. The payback came quickly, but it hurt much more. After that night, Rafe simply shut me off. No yelling, no fighting. His silence was deafening. I sent messages begging for a conversation, and he left me hanging. My only remaining connection to the Camerons was my deep friendship with his sisters, Sarah and Wheezie. One afternoon, I was lying on my bed scrolling through my phone when my Instagram feed updated. It was a new photo of Rafe. My stomach churned when I glanced at the comments and saw a heart left by Sofia. My blood rushed to my head. Jealousy and frustration overwhelmed me to such an extent that I couldn't stand still any longer. Needing an excuse to get into that house, I picked up the phone and texted Wheezie, arranging a last-minute "girls' night." Sarah would probably join us. But deep down, we both knew the face masks and gossip were just a pretext. I was crossing Cameron territory for one reason only: to confront Rafe once and for all.
