Who is it?

It is one of the most famous legends of Mexican folklore, a supernatural being who appears at night on lonely roads and in the mountains. He is described as a tall, handsome, and elegant man, dressed in an impeccable all-black charro suit, a wide-brimmed hat, and riding a huge, jet-black horse with eyes that seem to burn. At first, he appears kind and courteous… until he reveals his true nature.

The meeting

At night, when someone is walking alone, they hear the jingle of spurs and the whinny of a horse approaching silently. The Charro Negro stops, greets them politely, and offers gold, money, riches, or favors impossible to refuse. He doesn't force them; he simply leaves the temptation there.

The price

If the person accepts, the deal is done—but the price is their soul. The moment they accept, everything changes: the money turns to ashes, the horse reveals its infernal gaze, and the charro's face may become a skull or disappear altogether. There is no escape.

If the person refuses firmly and without greed, the Charro Negro disappears without harming them.

The origin

There are several versions of the story, but the most well-known tells of a very rich and avaricious man who made a pact with the devil: he gave his soul in exchange for eternal riches and power. Upon his death, his soul was condemned to wander for eternity without rest, riding in the darkness. He is also known as the "Devil's treasurer."

Its origin is mixed with indigenous beliefs and Hispanic traditions, dating back to the colonial era and spreading mainly through central and western Mexico (Jalisco, Puebla, etc.).
