Paislee was a 16-year-old girl who lived in Palon, Japan, in the year 2150, a year after brutal wars. So devastating was it that humanity had to start over, so even though it was 2150, it felt like the 1950s. Palon was divided into 12 districts, each specializing in one thing, and the first was the Capitol. Palon also hosted an event that had been held for many years called the Hunger Games, and now the 75th Hunger Games were about to take place, organized by the Capitol.

In Palom, an event called the Hunger Games was held every year. How it worked: 12 districts, all oppressed while some were more prosperous, under the rule of the wealthy and totalitarian Capitol. The 12 districts each sent two tributes between the ages of 12 and 18, one male and one female. The tributes had to fight for 47 hours in the arena, and only one could survive. The arena could range from a desolate, ruined city to a scorching desert. The Hunger Games were held to remind everyone that rebellion would not be tolerated by the Capitol. The Games were also broadcast on national television, and everyone was required to watch them to remember the Capitol's power.

Paislee lives in a hut in her district, which was 12 (one of the poorest), along with her mother and her sister Prim, who had just turned 12, so these would be her first Hunger Games. But Paislee wasn't worried about that because her name would only appear once in the jar (the number of slips of paper with your name on them increased depending on how many harvests you brought). Paislee was in charge of hunting food for her family and had a group of friends who were also from her district: (K, E.G., Nicholas, Fuma, Yuma, Jo, Harua, Taki, and Maki). She had known them since she was little and was very fond of them, and they of Paislee.
