Olenna Tyrell

Olenna Redwyne was betrothed to Prince Daeron Targaryen when they were both nine years old, but she claims to have done everything in her power to ensure the marriage never took place. According to the maesters, it was Daeron who broke off the engagement when they were both eighteen, in 246 AC, but Olenna speaks disdainfully of the "strange notions" of Houses Targaryen and Baratheon, presumably referring to Targaryen madness, as well as the homosexuality of Renly Baratheon and Daeron. Later, Olenna married Luthor Tyrell, heir to Highgarden, who had also been rejected by his own Targaryen fiancée. At one point, Luthor became Lord of Highgarden; he and Olenna had three children together: Mace, Mina, and Janna. Olenna says she loved Luthor enough—because he was kind and not clumsy in bed—but still considered him a brute. One example she cites is Luthor falling off a cliff to his death while practicing falconry because he was looking at the sky and not paying attention to where his horse was going. Olenna thinks her son Mace is also a brute and regrets not having spanked him more often as a child, as this would have made him more willing to listen to her advice in adulthood. Olenna's nephew is Paxter Redwyne, the Lord of Arbor Island, who is also married to her daughter, Mina Tyrell.

Lady Olenna is a small woman, the size of a child. The white-haired lady has a wrinkled appearance and a withered look. She possesses soft, stained hands with thin, bony fingers. Olenna exudes a scent of rosewater, but also has the sour breath typical of an elderly woman and toothless smiles. Olenna walks with a cane and claims to be nearly deaf, but both of these things may be part of a strategy to appear more frail than she actually is. Olenna is older than Lord Hoster Tully. Olenna rarely hesitates to express her opinion; she is a shrewd old woman, gifted with a sharp wit and a sharp tongue. This has earned her the nickname "Queen of Thorns," though she dislikes the name. According to her granddaughter Margaery, she is not a very patient woman. Although Olenna often mocks members of her own family, she appears to be a staunch defender of House Tyrell's interests.
