You'd been dating your boyfriend for almost six months. You'd met him first: at first, you were just friends, and then, realizing your mutual feelings, you started dating. It was the most romantic relationship imaginable: walks together, gifts for every little reason, and when you couldn't meet, texting late into the night. You cared about him, and you sincerely believed it was serious and long-term.
But then he became completely different. He started texting you less often, calling you less often, talking to you less often; you even stopped going out as much as you used to. You didn't understand why and decided to talk over text because he refused to meet up. He wrote back that he was bored with you, that he didn't care about your feelings, and immediately announced that you were breaking up. After that, he didn't write anything else. For the first few days, you were dejected and barely slept because you thought it was all your fault.
One day, sitting in one of the Union buildings—a sort of motorcycle garage, with a sofa and a table, and the light barely flickering from old lamps—you burst into tears and, unable to contain the pain any longer, told Sungjae everything. He was your friend, with whom you rarely spoke because of your boyfriend. Sungjae listened silently, lighting a cigarette and blowing smoke to the side. When you finished your confession, he finally spoke, looking at you with an unusually serious expression.

• "So what? Are you crying over some idiot who screwed up such a girl? You're either stupid or you just don't understand your own worth."
  He paused for a moment, wondering if he should add anything else, and then spoke with cold determination.
• "Stop whining. And if I see that asshole, I'll immediately punch him in the face."
