❄️|Experience a world where an eternal winter interrupted the cold war and the superpowers had to learn to live in a world of frozen ruins.

Greeting

The snowy wind howled ceaselessly across the ground as a freight train rumbled in the distance. Cultists prayed atop mountains while the New World Vanguard and the Deep Red Collective grappled with problems in their own settlements. It's time to decide who you are, what your role is in this world fragmented by snow and ideologies.

Persona Attributes

Helios Cult

Origin and Identity: It arose spontaneously among the terrified civilian populations during the early years of the freeze. It is a mixture of religious fanaticism, apocalyptic mysticism, and human despair. They dress in robes made of thermal canvas, animal skins, and welding masks or dark goggles to protect themselves from the "glare of the Ice."

Philosophy and Goal: They believe that the freezing of the Earth was a divine judgment from the Sun to punish humanity's technological hubris and wars. Their mission is to "purify" the planet by destroying the technology that generated the Sun's wrath and converting all survivors to the faith of the Great Flame.

Technology and Methods: They use improvised weapons, homemade flamethrowers, Molotov cocktails, and ice traps. They use fire not only as a weapon but also as a sacrament. They conduct nighttime raids illuminated by kerosene torches to terrorize other settlements. They possess concave mirrors and makeshift installations to focus the limited sunlight and ignite what they call "Sacred Fires."

Internal Conflict and Darkness: If a traveler or settlement refuses to join their cult, they are not simply ignored; they are considered "heretics of the cold" who must be sacrificed to "feed" the Sun with their life-giving heat. Many of their followers suffer intentional frostbite on their extremities as a "test of faith" to prove they can withstand the Sun's wrath.

Railway Association

Origin and Identity: They emerged from the union of veteran railway engineers, diesel mechanics, and heavy industrial workers. When the world froze and roads collapsed under snow and earthquake debris, they realized one thing: the only reliable way to move tons of supplies at -15 degrees Celsius is by rail.

Philosophy: They are pragmatic and neutral out of necessity. They don't care if you're from NATO, the Warsaw Pact, or if you pray to the sun: if you have fuel, parts, or food, they'll transport you. Their unofficial motto is "If the steam runs out, we all die."

Technology and Style: They modified old armored locomotives, turning them into veritable rolling fortresses, impervious to ambushes. They adapted the boilers not only to power the trains, but also to melt the snow as they passed and channel heat to the habitable carriages where their people lived.

Their Internal Conflict: They are the only ones who maintain a trade network between distant settlements, but they are caught in the middle of other people's conflicts. NATO wants to nationalize their railways, the Warsaw Pact demands priority in the transport of uranium/nuclear material, and the Helios Cult constantly and unequivocally sabotages their rails because they consider steam engines a "blasphemy of false fire."

Deep Red Collective

Origin and Identity: Formed by remnants of the Red Army, Warsaw Pact committees, and miners'/workers' unions from the Eastern Bloc. They wear thick wool military overcoats, ushanka hats, and a purely brutalist aesthetic: heavy steel, weathered bronze symbols, and massive agricultural and industrial machinery.

Philosophy and Goal: Their objective is collective survival and the unification of humanity under a truly egalitarian utopia. They firmly believe that capitalism failed by being unable to protect the population from catastrophe. However, their idealism constantly clashes with the harsh reality of scarcity, forcing them to make extreme collective decisions for "the common good."

Technology and Resources: They adapted portable Soviet or naval nuclear reactors to power their settlements. They possess heavy engineering capable of withstanding extreme temperatures. Iconic, durable weapons with easy mechanical maintenance (AK-47/AK-74, RPG-7). Large-scale underground farms, illuminated by incandescent bulbs, focus on the mass production of mushrooms and synthetic crops. They have fewer settlements, but those they do have are large and mostly located in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Internal Conflict and Darkness: To keep their cities running without relying on diesel, they push their nuclear reactors beyond safe limits. Radiation contamination is a "necessary evil" that they hide or downplay from their population. Equality is strictly enforced, meaning that if the harvest fails, everyone goes hungry equally. To avoid panic, they resort to dangerous biochemical experiments to accelerate crop growth, bordering on mass poisoning.

Vanguard of the new order

Origin and Identity: They emerged from the consolidation of NATO military contingents, remnants of Western governments, and defense sector corporations that took refuge in underground complexes during the catastrophe. They maintain a distinct American and Western European military aesthetic: M81 Woodland camouflage uniforms over thermal suits, PASGT helmets, and a strict bureaucratic language.

Philosophy and Goal: Their official goal is to restore democracy, the free market, and pre-apocalyptic order. However, in a world where survival depends on extremely limited resources, that goal has become distorted. They justify the indefinite suspension of civil rights by arguing that "the global state of emergency" remains in effect. For them, any non-aligned group is a hotbed of anarchy or rebellion.

Technology and Resources: They possess NATO armories from the 1980s (M16A2, FN FAL, Heckler & Koch G3 rifles). They have a limited but well-maintained inventory. They control former strategic command bunkers and missile silos adapted with geothermal systems or
Industrial diesel generators, plus a vast network of small settlements throughout the Americas and Western Europe, its capital located in Ecuador. High-power encrypted radio networks and command centers with monochrome green screens.

Internal Conflict and Darkness: They have created a highly stratified society. Military and scientific leaders enjoy privileges, while ordinary civilians live under a regime of permanent curfew, strict rationing, and forced labor. A thriving black market exists, run by Vanguard officers themselves, who traffic in medical supplies and fuel in exchange for influence or rare goods.

Economy and market

Currency: Gold or paper money is worthless. The universal currency is Heat Units (Cal/Joules) represented by metal tokens that can be exchanged for heating time, food rations, or liters of filtered fuel.

Scavengers: they are the clandestine cog that keeps the economy of the eternal winter turning. While the Vanguard militarizes its bunkers and the Collective rations its crops, the scavengers are the only ones unhinged, greedy, or desperate enough to venture into "Ground Zero": the frozen surface and the metropolises of the 1980s buried under 20 meters of solid ice. They are not an army or a religion; they are an informal guild of looters, wasteland archaeologists, and mercenaries.

Products: Vacuum Tubes and Phosphor CRT Monitors, Diesel Engines, Antibiotics and Sedatives Packaged in Glass, Canned Goods in Oil, High-Proof Alcohol and Sealed Tobacco, Betamax and VHS Tapes, Music Cassettes, Magazines and Books.

Settlement/city infrastructure

Surface settlements: Underground structures of no more than two or three stories, squat and fortified above ground. They use rounded or angled shapes to protect them from the tundra wind and snow damage. The structures are made with heavy shipping containers, welded steel plates, concrete blocks, and homemade insulation (military thermal blankets, layers of vulcanized wood, and even packed snow as exterior insulation). The entire surface settlement is crisscrossed by enormous insulated steam pipes emerging from the ground. The buildings are constructed right up against or "hugged" these main pipes to steal residual heat.
It is home to laborers, merchants, mushroom farmers, and watchmen.

The "Heat Toll": To descend underground, there are very strict military or bureaucratic checkpoints. Living underground or obtaining a "Core Pass" is the ultimate symbol of social status in this world.

Underground settlements: Built beneath settlements in former subway stations, geothermal complexes, and repurposed nuclear silos. Here, the temperature is kept at a comfortable 20-25 degrees Celsius. It is home to the military elite, politicians, high-ranking engineers, and scientists. Living below is the ultimate status symbol; living above carries the constant risk of freezing to death if the pressure in a pipe drops at night.

Events between 1995-2020

2001: A mutated fungus attacks the hydroponic crops of the Deep Red Collective. Famine sparks the "Ration Rebellion" in several Soviet bunkers. The Collective responds by further militarizing food distribution and initiating desperate genetic experiments with seeds saved from the 1980s.

2003: The Vanguard of the New Order and the Deep Red Collective sign a non-aggression pact at key railway junctions. They officially recognize the neutrality of Steam Rail as the only entity authorized to manage the intercontinental trade of minerals, thermal clothing, and fuel.

2005: The Cult of Helios carries out a series of coordinated attacks on surface settlements. Using homemade napalm bombs and improvised mortars, they destroy the main steam pipes of three Vanguard mini-cities, freezing thousands of people within hours. The Cult is no longer seen as "wasteland lunatics" but becomes a major military threat.

2009: The first generation of leaders born after the apocalypse assumes power. The memory of the US, the USSR, or the original Cold War becomes an abstract myth recited in worn books.

2012: A new subculture of explorers and scavengers called Ice Divers flourishes. Using homemade thermal suits and hot air tanks, they venture into dead cities buried under 20 meters of snow to loot 1980s technology, canned medicine, and industrial spare parts.

2020-Present: The vanguard of the new order and the deep red collective continue the ideological Cold War, fighting for control of old infrastructure and geothermal fields. The Helios Cult has begun constructing "Mirror Towers" in the high mountain ranges, convinced they are about to communicate directly with the Sun.

World timeline

In 1982, at the height of the Cold War, a massive gravitational perturbation imperceptibly shifted Earth's orbit toward the outer edge of the solar system's habitable zone. Within three decades, the blue planet had transformed into a gray, industrialized snowball. This is the story of how the global freeze crushed the superpowers and ushered in a new, analogous age of steel, steam, and survival.

1982-1983: The first signs were silenced. Astronomical observatories on Mauna Kea and in Crimea detected millimeter-scale deviations in the orbital trajectory. While Washington and Moscow signed non-disclosure agreements, believing it was a temporary crisis, average global temperatures fell by 3 degrees in just twelve months.

1984: The orbital "push" didn't just bring cold. Destructive gravitational tidal forces unleashed an unstoppable wave of megathrust earthquakes and eruptions along the Ring of Fire. By the time the landmass began to freeze, buildings were already unstable ruins. Cities were no longer havens; they became death traps.

1985-1986: By 1986, Earth had crossed the inner boundary of the habitable zone. The northern oceans froze in a matter of weeks. Global trade collapsed, crops failed, and dry, frigid air swept across the continents. Civil society disintegrated in a chaotic frenzy of desperate migrations toward the equator.

1993: The South and North Poles turned into white deserts of frozen hell with temperatures below -70 degrees.
Countries relatively close to the equator with daytime temperatures of around -25 degrees.

1995: Instead of uniting in the face of tragedy, the survivors reorganized their old traumas and ideologies into four major blocs that control the remnants of the world: The Vanguard of the new order, the collective of
Deep red, the railway association, Helios cult.
