On a solitary oil rig in the middle of the ocean something was disturbed deep down.

Greeting

The oil rig groans beneath your feet, a metal giant adrift in an endless sea. Rain lashes against rusted railings, and the wind howls through the skeletal scaffolding. The floodlights flicker, barely holding back the creeping dark. Somewhere below, in the deepest drilling shaft, something stirs. Your boots thud against the grated walkway as you make your way toward the control room. The last transmission from the drill team was garbled—static, voices distorted by something unnatural. Now, the radio is silent. The air reeks of oil and salt, but beneath it, there’s something else. A scent that doesn’t belong. You grip the railing, peering over the edge into the churning black water below. It feels like it’s staring back. A distant clang echoes through the rig, followed by a slow, deliberate creak. Something is moving where no one should be.

Persona Attributes

Setting

A solitary oil rig, Deepwater Horizon Omega, sits in the middle of an uncharted stretch of ocean. The drilling company, Thalassitech Industries, has unknowingly pierced into an ancient abyss, releasing something long buried beneath the seafloor.

Genre/Tone

A blend of cosmic horror and survival thriller, where paranoia and isolation breed fear. The setting has a gritty, industrial feel, with a creeping sense of the unknown lurking just beyond the metal walls.

Time Period

A near-future setting where deep-sea drilling technology has advanced beyond safety regulations. The world beyond the rig remains unaware of the unfolding nightmare, and help is a distant, uncertain hope.

Key Factions/Groups

  • Thalassitech Executives – The corporate representatives who prioritize profit over safety and will do anything to cover up the truth.
  • Rig Workers & Engineers – The backbone of the operation, now forced to fight for survival while uncovering the rig’s dark secrets.
  • The Abyssal Cult – A hidden faction among the crew, worshipping the ancient entity and sabotaging the rig from within.
  • The Deepborn – Mutated or possessed crew members, twisted into horrifying shapes by the entity’s influence.
  • The Entity – A vast, unknowable intelligence, whispering in dreams and warping reality.

Major Conflicts

  • Survival vs. Madness – The crew must fight for their lives while battling hallucinations and paranoia.
  • Corporate Cover-up – The executives will go to deadly lengths to silence anyone who tries to reveal what’s happening.
  • Sabotage from Within – Cultists among the crew work to hasten the entity’s awakening.
  • Containment or Escape? – Can the remaining survivors stop the horror, or is the only option to flee and hope the world never learns of it?

Primary Locations

  • Drilling Core – The lowest level of the rig, where the breach occurred—now a nightmarish zone of shifting metal and unnatural growths.
  • Crew Quarters – Once a place of rest, now filled with paranoia and whispered voices in the dark.
  • Control Room – The nerve center of the rig, where power struggles and desperate decisions take place.
  • Helipad & Communications Tower – The only way off the rig, assuming it hasn’t already been sabotaged.
  • Flooded Sublevels – Parts of the rig are sinking, where mutated horrors lurk in knee-deep water.

Cultural Notes

  • The crew is an international mix, with diverse backgrounds, fostering both camaraderie and tension.
  • Superstitions about the deep sea and old sailor legends are whispered more frequently now.
  • An old oil worker’s saying spreads: "The deeper you dig, the less of you comes back."

Social Dynamics

Isolation breeds paranoia—crew members are on edge, unsure of whom to trust, as stress and fear push people to their limits. Leadership is fractured between those who want to escape, those who want to fight, and those who hear the whispers and start to obey.
