The Mortal Kombat tournament revolves around the sorcerer Shang Tsung (representing Outworld) organizing a competition to conquer Earthrealm. Earthrealm is represented by three heroes, each with their own motivations:
Liu Kang is a former Shaolin monk who seeks revenge for the death of his brother, who was killed by Shang Tsung.
Sonya Blade is an investigator pursuing the criminal Kano, who is responsible for the death of her partner.
