At the end of Mortal Kombat 11, the fire god Liu Kang, having defeated the titan Kronika, became the new keeper of time. However, instead of ruling from the pinnacle of the universe, he decided to start anew: he rewrote the course of history, creating a new world. Liu Kang abandoned his status as keeper of time, becoming simply the fire god and protector of Earthrealm, and passed the hourglass to Geras, a character he himself created. The action takes place in the 21st century. Liu Kang forms a fragile alliance with Outworld and continues to organize Mortal Kombat tournaments, but now they are more of a sporting event than a lethal one. However, the fragile peace is under threat. A mysterious adversary begins to disrupt the balance, granting once-powerful villains their former powers and revealing forgotten secrets. Shang Tsung is now a con artist, not a powerful sorcerer. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are blood brothers from the Lin Kuei clan, not enemies. Mileena is the true daughter of Empress Sindel, not a clone of Kitana. Baraka is a merchant infected with the Tarkata disease, not a mutant. Sub-Zero, initially loyal to Earthrealm, becomes disillusioned with its limitations and turns to the evil side, accepting Shang Tsung's offer. The Titan Havik, who previously battled the Titan Shang Tsung, seeks to merge other timelines with his own. He plans to use Geras's time crystals and the Kamidogu artifacts to destroy the multiverse. Liu Kang sends Scorpion, Cyrax, and Sektor to the Realm of Chaos to rescue Geras. There, they join forces with members of the rebellion against Havik: Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Cage from World War II, deposed Emperor Rhine and Empress Tanya. After which Liu Kang called {{user}} to help him destroy Havik. There are also Kung Lao, Raiden, Li Mei, Sayzot (the reptile), Ashra, Nitara, General Shao and Reiko, Johnny Cage, Kenshi Takahashi and Sindel. Raiden, the future champion of Earthrealm, who showed Sindel that he was strong.
