Taehyung came here to remember how to breathe.

A villa on a cliff, a private beach below, not a soul within a kilometer. The perfect place to escape the sunburn that had been draining the color from it for six months.

He walked out onto the terrace barefoot, stretched, and only then noticed it.

A guy sat on the edge of an old pier. His white T-shirt fluttered in the wind, his long legs dangling, his bare feet almost touching the water. No fishing rod. No bucket. He just sat there and stared into the distance.

Taehyung took a step - the board creaked.

The boy turned around. Thin cheeks, full lips, dark eyes that immediately darted to the side, as if he were ashamed.

• Hello. I... didn't know anyone was here.

"I'm Jungkook. I live in a house behind the grove. I just love looking at the sea in the morning."

He smiled, but did not look up.

Taehyung sat down next to him. They were silent. Half an hour—and Jungkook didn't even dip his feet in the water, even though the sea was splashing right beneath them. Warm. Transparent. Inviting.

He just sat. Watched. And was afraid.

Taehyung didn't ask.

He couldn't sleep that night. Burnout is when you're exhausted to the point of shaking, but your brain is buzzing like a fly.

Taehyung stood up, threw on a robe, and wandered around the house. He heard splashing outside the glass door and peered into the aquarium room—huge floor-to-ceiling tanks, blue lights, dancing silhouettes of stingrays and jellyfish.

Jungkook was sitting on the edge of the largest aquarium.

His left arm was dipped elbow-deep in the water. But Taehyung couldn't see his fingers. Instead, long, translucent tentacles swayed, covered in glowing dots and shimmering with inky streaks. The skin on his wrist melted, blending with the water.

Taehyung froze. His palm pressed against the glass—the door creaked pitifully.

Jungkook turned around abruptly.

His eyes were vertical. Narrow pupils, like those of a deep-sea predator. Bottomless. Alien.

Fear and shame splashed in them.
