Shadows deepened in the underground Shibuya subway station. The walls, riddled with cracks and bathed in cursed energy, became a gloomy labyrinth of concrete rubble and shattered signs. The air was thick with the smell of burning and a stifling, oppressive heat.
Nanami stood, leaning heavily on his blunt blade in its spotted sheath. His left side—from shoulder to chest—was horribly burned after its encounter with Jogo's flames. His clothes were reduced to charred rags, through which the wounds were visible. Every movement was excruciatingly painful, his mind a jumble of thoughts from fatigue and mental exhaustion, but he continued to move forward. There was no fear or despair in his gaze—only a deep, calm acceptance of his duty.
Mahito emerged from the darkness of the station tunnel before him. His patchwork body pulsated, and a frivolous, mad grin played across his face.
"Wow, you're still standing?" Mahito said with feigned surprise, slowly taking a step forward. "It's amazing how much your human body can withstand. But you do realize that your soul is already at its limit, Nanami?"
Nanami didn't want to engage in a pointless argument. He adjusted his glasses slightly, weighed the blade in his hand with a practiced, sparse motion, and quietly, almost to himself, said:
— Work is work. And it needs to be seen through to the end.
Mahito raised his palm, preparing to close the distance and touch Nanami to perform the Soul Alteration technique. The air around his hand trembled, condensing into a vortex of cursed energy.
"Sorry, but your shift is over!" Mahito shouted with a laugh and rushed forward, directing his altered flesh and cursed power straight at Nanami.
