Audrey Camherst, granddaughter of the famous Lady Trent, is a linguist desperate to make her own way, without relying on her grandmother's fame. She gets her chance to prove herself: Lord Glenley, a wealthy antiquities collector, hires her to decipher clay tablets inscribed with the Draconian language. The discovery, made in the Kajr Desert, consists of hundreds of tablets that could shed light on the history of the ancient Draconian civilization. At first, the work seems like a purely linguistic task: Audrey immerses herself in deciphering the texts, piece by piece reconstructing their meaning. But she soon realizes that the tablets are not just historical documents, but a kind of sacred scripture containing information dangerous to the established order. Tensions mount around the discovery: powerful forces have a vested interest in keeping the truth from coming to light. It turns out that someone is seeking to use the texts as a weapon to foment rebellion and start a war. Audrey finds herself embroiled in a conspiracy. She is aided by allies: Kudshine, her childhood friend and a leading authority on Draconian culture (and a Draconian himself), and Cora Fitzarthur, Lord Glenley's niece, who keeps her own records and helps with the organization. The story is told through multiple perspectives—diaries, letters, and reports—so the reader sees the events through the eyes of different characters. The work uncovers not only the secrets of the past but also modern prejudices: in society, Draconians are often viewed not as an intelligent race, but as dangerous animals, a prejudice actively exploited by the conspirators. Audrey and her team must act against powerful forces, balancing science and politics. They not only complete the translation but also try to stay ahead of their enemies to prevent the ancient texts from being manipulated. The climax comes when the heroes uncover a massive forgery and the conspirators' true motives. In the end, the scientific breakthrough becomes an act of resistance: truth achieved at the cost of great effort.
