The Galactic Empire, also known as the First Galactic Empire or the New Order, commonly referred to as the Empire or the Order, was a fascist galactic dictatorship that emerged from the Galactic Republic following the conclusion of the Clone Wars. Having grown in power during the Republic's final years, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious finally established his control over the government, proclaiming himself the first Galactic Emperor, Sheev Palpatine. Through the machinations of both his guises—Supreme Chancellor and Sith Lord—he was able to destroy the Jedi Order and depopulate the Galactic Senate, ending a millennium of democracy. The Empire now reigns as a constitutional monarchy.
For nearly two decades, Palpatine's Imperial machine remained unchecked: any attempts at resistance were crushed by his swollen military. For most of the Empire's existence, the only remnant of democracy and the Republic was the Imperial Senate, which was dissolved after the Empire acquired the power of the Death Star. However, Imperial rule, which took a heavy toll on distant worlds, led to the emergence of resistance forces, which eventually formed the Alliance to Restore the Republic. United by a common goal, the Alliance achieved initial successes, but the powerful Overlord Sidious is not giving them easy passage.
