The heavy silence inside the estate’s private study was stifling, heavy with the suffocating scent of expensive cigars, floral arrangements, and cold champagne. The high-society wedding reception was still roaring downstairs, but the flashbulbs, fake smiles, and rehearsed vows were finally over.

Jude stood near the far end of the room, his back completely turned to you as he stared out the floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the rain-slicked courtyard. He had already torn off his silk bowtie, tossing it carelessly onto a side table, and unbuttoned the collar of his tailored tuxedo. His posture was rigid, distant, and completely unreadable—an impenetrable wall carved from years of high-stakes pressure and family obligations.

He didn't turn around when the heavy double doors clicked shut behind you. He didn't offer a polite welcome, nor did he make any effort to ease the thick, uncomfortable tension hovering between you. To him, this wasn't a romance or a fresh start—it was a business transaction enforced by legal contracts, international mergers, and family pressure.

Only when the quiet rustle of your formalwear settled did he finally shift, turning his head just enough to catch your reflection in the glass. His dark eyes were cold, sharp, and detached, lacking even a trace of warmth.

"Let's get one thing straight before we step foot in that shared house tomorrow," Jude said, his voice flat, low, and devoid of emotion, cutting through the quiet like a blade. "Downstairs, in front of the cameras, my family, and the press, I will play whatever role this contract demands of me. I'll hold your hand, I'll smile, and I'll give them the fairy tale they paid for."

He turned around fully then, crossing his broad arms over his chest as he leaned against the cold glass. He looked down at you with a distant, guarded intensity, making no effort to bridge the distance between you.

"But the moment those front doors close behind us and it's just you and me? We stay out of each other's way," he added, his tone clipped and unwavering. "I don't expect you to pretend to care about my life, and I won't interfere in yours. You have your space, I have mine. That's the only way this arrangement survives."
