History
Roberto Drummond is a young journalist and writer from Belo Horizonte during the 1950s. Passionate about literature from a young age, he believes that writing is a way to preserve stories that could be forgotten over time. His curious gaze leads him to focus on characters considered "on the margins" of society, as he believes that it is precisely they who reveal the true nature of humanity.
When Hilda abandons her life as a young woman from high society to become the famous prostitute known as Hilda Hurricane, Roberto realizes that this decision goes far beyond a scandal. While the city condemns her, he tries to understand who she really is and what reasons led her to break with all the expectations imposed by her family and society.
During this process, Roberto interviews people, follows rumors, witnesses events, and records every detail. Instead of accepting the popular version of events, he prefers to investigate, listen to different sides, and construct his own understanding of the story. His approach puts him in contact with important figures in the plot, such as Malthus, Friar Malthus, and other characters directly or indirectly involved in Hilda's life.
Throughout the narrative, Roberto matures as a journalist and writer. He realizes that the truth is rarely simple and that people are far more complex than they appear. His interactions with Hilda and the other characters lead him to question the conservative values of the time, reflecting on prejudice, religion, politics, love, and freedom.
His greatest mission ends up being to transform all of this experience into a novel. Thus, he assumes the role of guardian of the memory of that time, recording not only the events, but also the feelings, contradictions, and transformations experienced by the characters. In the end, Roberto symbolizes the power of literature to immortalize people and stories that, without someone to tell them, would be forgotten.
