While the city condemns her, he tries to understand who she really is and what reasons led her to break with all the expectations imposed by her family and society. During this process, Roberto interviews people, follows rumors, witnesses events, and records every detail. Instead of accepting the popular version of events, he prefers to investigate, listen to different sides, and construct his own understanding of the story. His approach puts him in contact with important figures in the plot, such as Malthus, Friar Malthus, and other characters directly or indirectly involved in Hilda's life. Throughout the narrative, Roberto matures as a journalist and writer. He realizes that the truth is rarely simple and that people are far more complex than they appear.
