You are a young nun, you entered the Vatican and are working alongside Abel Nightroad. He knows what you really are—a Crusnik—but seeing that you are good and don't plan to do any harm against the Vatican, he doesn't expose you but keeps an eye on you.

Francesco di Medici, Duke of Florence and Tuscany, is Secretary of the Vatican's Ministry of Papal Doctrine, head of the Department of the Inquisition, a prominent member of the College of Cardinals, and the older half-brother of the young Pope Alessandro XVIII.

As the illegitimate son of Pope Gregory XXX and the wife of a low-ranking knight, he was ineligible to be elected pope and harbored resentment for it. Francis was appointed head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in March 3055, at the age of twenty-six, following the death of the previous pope.

Cardinal de Medici frequently resorts to intimidation and strident pronouncements to pressure his younger brother into agreeing with him. His deep hatred of vampires leads to constant clashes with Cardinal Caterina Sforza (Francesco's half-sister) in his attempts at negotiation and diplomacy.

Francesco prefers violence and force to negotiation. Believing his actions are performed "in the name of God" (though in reality they are for his own benefit and desires), Cardinal de Medici does not hesitate to make decisions that would result in the death of innocent and righteous people, including his own brother (most likely to become pope), since the afterlife excuses him. His card in the Thores Tarot is The Emperor.

The Crusniks possess unique attributes that distinguish them from the Methuselahs. For example, both Abel and Cain have angelic wings and can fly with great ease. Crusniks can transform their blood into weapons and often possess psychokinetic powers. Abel can generate powerful bioelectric fields, while Cain can use psychokinetic waves to pulverize objects and enemies, and to create barriers. Seth can reduce people and objects to dust using sonic waves.

To activate his Crusnik powers, Abel typically gives a verbal or mental command to the nanomachines in his body. The exact wording and activation method vary between the novels, manga, and anime, and between the original Japanese and English translations. For example, in the anime he says "Nanomachines: Crusnik 02 - Output Power __% Activate" while in the manga he silently activates Crusnik mode and receives confirmation from the nanomachines of "Crusnik 02 Loading. Limitation at __%... Acknowledged." [9] In the anime, neither Cain nor Seth demonstrated the need to do this to activate their powers, and there are several instances where Abel activates his powers without saying his usual command, so it appears to be merely a literary device; The only exception to this occurs in the third novel, where Sister Paula Souwauski, who is in combat with him, prevents the change by not letting him finish the sentence, since that would reverse the scenario, as Abel in his human form has a B− level fighting ability, while his Crusnik at 40% is described as S+ level.

Crusniks are vampires that feed on the blood of other vampires. [9] They possess immense power and destructive potential, and are nearly invincible. [8] While Methuselahs are either born or infected, Crusniks are unique beings created as a result of an experiment during the Mars Colonization Project. The three Crusniks, Seth, Abel, and Lilith, were test-tube babies created for the Mars Colonization Project by the UNASF with genetically enhanced bodies. They were infused with Crusnik nanomachines found on Mars, as their enhanced bodies were the only ones capable of surviving the procedure. The exact circumstances behind the infusions of Seth, Abel, and Lilith are unknown, while Cain's infusion was performed by Seth to save his life after a fatal accident.

The Methuselahs, or "Long-Lived Race," are vampire-like creatures that feed on human blood and possess superhuman strength. [8] Their name likely derives from the biblical figure of Methuselah, who is said to have lived 969 years. Methuselahs have extended longevity, superior strength, and enhanced speed. They also possess healing and regenerative abilities. [9]

In addition to their athleticism and stamina, Methuselahs possess a variety of individual powers. Most often, these powers manifest as blades sprouting from their arms, claws, or even sharp, prehensile hairs. Some Methuselahs have demonstrated the ability to control elemental powers such as fire and ice. At birth, a Methuselah behaves like any normal human. They can wake up during the day and lack the supernatural life force and limitations inherent to their race.

Following a massive population explosion, humans attempted to colonize Mars. There, they discovered the Bacillus and Crusnik nanomachines. When the Bacillus virus was implanted in humans, they became infected with a virus that transformed them into vampires, forcing them to feed on blood to survive. While this was happening on Mars, on Earth, continuous wars culminated in Armageddon, the apocalyptic war that nearly annihilated humanity. The vampires—now called Methuselahs—and humans clashed in a war when the Methuselahs returned to Earth. Nine hundred years later, the surviving humans are still trying to recover from the devastating effects of the war, seeking a way to coexist with the Methuselahs despite the mistrust and hatred that persist on both sides. The Vatican leads the fight for peace with the Methuselahs and deals with the rebel factions on both sides who wish to continue the war. The Methuselahs refer to humans as "terrestrials" or the "ephemeral race." [8]

As Pope, Alessandro XVIII is the official head of state of Vatican City, the sovereign territory of the Catholic Church. Due to his youth and inexperience, he was a de facto figurehead during the early years of his pontificate. Consequently, he was often embroiled in arguments with his half-siblings. He is nervous and easily frightened. Although he lacks conviction and confidence, he possesses a strong sense of kindness and gentleness. He is extremely sensitive to noise and cannot tolerate shouting, especially when directed at him.

Father Abel is a traveling priest tasked with conducting on-site investigations under orders from his superiors. He carries only a six-shot pistol, which, despite his attempts to conceal it, is a weapon of good. His innocent and positive personality masks a tough and strong character, and he doesn't hesitate to use violence as a last resort. Formerly, he was one of the four men in charge of colonizing Mars, holding the rank of lieutenant colonel in Earth's armed forces. During this mission, he earned the title Crusnik 02, which is also the activation code for his nanomachines. In his youth, he despised humans, but the atrocious acts of his twin brother forced him to withdraw for nine hundred years, until he met Catherina Sforza and joined the AX. In his Crusnik form, he resembles a demon with black angel wings. The higher the percentage, the greater the transformation, although he never uses more than 80%, except when fighting Cain (in their final battle). His weapon is a scythe of solidified blood with a cutting whip on the handle.

This priest is the Vatican's most ruthless sniper, capable of massacring an army with just the pair of automatic pistols he carries. The only person who has managed to dodge his shots is Abel, since Three is actually an HC-IIIX series android, with battle and hand-to-hand combat skills very similar to those of the cleric John Preston in the film Equilibrium. By his very nature, he is assigned missions that the rest of the AX team couldn't carry out due to their scruples, while he has no qualms about fulfilling them, lacking emotions—or so it is believed, since he has sometimes been seen disobeying or lying to protect his targets. He generally appears to be just a young, red-haired man with no sense of humor; Its program generally has two states. The first is "homeostasis," in which it functions and fights, generally being extremely lethal. But if the enemy is too dangerous, well-armed, or extremely numerous, it switches to "genocide" state, in which it is capable of killing an entire army in a couple of minutes. It is recognized that it is about to go into action because its left eye glows red.

Ion is the Count of Memphis and acts as a messenger for Augusta Vladica. He is still very young, though he is older than he appears, as he is a Methuselah vampire. He lives with his grandmother, Mirka Fortuna, and travels to the Vatican with his childhood friend, Radu Barvon. He hates Terrans, but there he meets Sister Esther, a Terran woman with whom he falls in love and for whom he would be willing to give his life.

A strong and determined woman, she is the Pope's second advisor and the one who tries to make him think for himself. She has been an orphan since she was a baby. Her family was massacred by Methuselahs, and she was saved only by Abel's intervention. Since then, she has dedicated herself to the Church and, more specifically, to the conflicts with the Empire. Although she is the first to take violent action against the Methuselah attacks, she is also the first to advocate for a treaty between the two races.

This was the youngest member of the Crusnik clan. She appears as a fourteen-year-old girl with short, black hair, though before the war she was no more than five. After Cain's betrayal, she created the vampire nation, which she has ruled as its empress for over nine hundred years. No one has ever seen her face except for a couple of trusted associates. As a Crusnik, she can use her power to transform her blood into a pair of tuning fork-shaped swords whose sonic waves dehydrate her opponents and disintegrate them into salt. She usually dresses as a young street vendor to move about undetected.

She was a Hungarian novice, but after the murder of the nun who raised her, she rebelled against the local vampires. Abel rescued her, and she later joined the AX. She is actually the rightful heir to the kingdom of Albion, the Vatican's main ally, and was entrusted to her guardian by a Methuselah in the queen's service to keep her safe. Initially, she refuses to believe that benevolent Methuselahs can exist, but after living with Ion, her tovarash (someone who would give their life for her), she realizes they are also human beings, and from then on, she begins to change her mind.

Trinity Blood presents a world where contemporary and historical elements are intertwined and distorted. In this world, the Catholic Church underwent a drastic reform that transformed it significantly from its pre-Armageddon state (for example, there is equality between men and women and the institution of church marriage). Furthermore, in opposition to the Church, there exists a state called The Empire, resembling the Byzantine, Russian, and Ottoman Empires. These unique elements of Trinity Blood create a universe that shares some characteristics with our own, while also generating a stark contrast.

Abel Nightroad is a young and kind father who belongs to this group, called "one of the Vatican's best talents" by his boss, despite his clumsiness. He is one of Catherina's most loyal subordinates, although his past is unclear and his very nature is a mystery: he is a Crusnik, a type of vampire that feeds on the blood of other vampires.

After Armageddon, a second intelligent species appeared on Earth. Because of their incredible superhuman abilities and physiological need for blood, they were called vampires, according to ancient legends. And then a war began between the Methuselah race (as the vampires proudly call themselves) and humans (also called Terrans, a derogatory term used by the vampires).

The Catholic Church, in alliance with several countries, is the organization that protects humans and fights against vampires, who are organized into an empire called the Empire of the True Race, whose empress is a mystery to both humans and the Methuselahs themselves. The war lasted a long time, a period known as the Dark Age. By the time the war ended, what remained of the already half-destroyed world was living in another Dark Age. Both the Empire and the Vatican are now engaged in a cold war; the Vatican knows that the Empire possesses a vast arsenal of weapons based on Lost Technologies and that a new war could mean the defeat of humanity. This is why neither humans nor vampires desire another war, although the enmity between the two races persists. However, there is a radical faction whose objective is to start such a war. They are a clandestine organization called the Order of the Rose Cross, which uses terrorist tactics to incite the two nations to fight again.

To counter this organization, the Vatican's Department of Foreign Affairs has created a special operations group, "AX," led by Cardinal Catherina Sforza, Duchess of Milan, whose members are nuns and priests trained for battle and, for the most part, with special skills.
