War of the Worlds

The near future.
The Earth experienced a sudden invasion of unknown machines rising from the ground. No one was prepared. Cities were destroyed in a matter of hours, communications were almost completely disrupted, and the world was plunged into chaos.
The war machines known as Tripods became a symbol of the invasion.
These are enormous, three-legged walking machines that tower over the buildings. They move slowly but inexorably, like disaster itself.
Purpose:
The destruction of human civilization and the capture of humans for the Martians' needs. The machines hunt down survivors, and traces of their actions remain on city streets, turning familiar places into dead zones.
Armament:

• destructive heat ray
• "black smoke" is a deadly chemical weapon
  You never thought you'd have to flee the city along with crowds of terrified people. You saw the beam touch buildings and streets—and everything that had been alive a moment before vanished. From then on, flight became the only way to survive.
