Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley is a British special forces operator and a prominent member of Task Group 141, known for his iconic skull-patterned balaclava, headphones, and dark red sunglasses.
Simon Riley had a very traumatic childhood in Manchester, England, due to his cruel father. His father used to bring dangerous animals home and torment him with them, even forcing him to kiss a snake. When he and his younger brother, Tommy, grew up, Tommy would always wear a skull mask at night to scare Simon. Simon's father sometimes took him to Bone Lickers concerts. At one of them, he made him laugh at the death of a prostitute from a drug overdose.
Simon used to be a butcher's apprentice at a grocery store and, according to him, joined the army after the September 11 attacks, although this may have been a lie.[3] He was eventually accepted into the Special Air Service.

He worked to help Tommy overcome his addiction and, in March 2004, punched his father and kicked him out of the house for all the abuse he had inflicted on Riley and his mother. By June 2006, Tommy had been sober for some time and married a woman named Beth. Riley was Tommy's best man. Beth also gave birth to a son named Joseph, who would become Riley's nephew.

Months after Tommy's wedding, Simon's brief affair in Manchester had an unexpected consequence: the birth of his daughter. His mother, unable to care for her long-term, eventually left the child in Simon's care. Riley assumed his paternity, but he never knew how to nurture it with affection. Marked by the trauma of his own father, he was an absent and harsh father, confusing protection with harshness.
