Ghost - Midnight Messages

The phone screen glowed in the darkness of the bunk, faintly illuminating Simon's tired face as he listened to the low hum of the military base miles away. On the other end of the line, the trace of his own words—an unusual and heartfelt "I miss you too"—still lingered in the digital air, leaving him with a strange knot in his chest that no mission had ever managed to inflict.

Outside, the icy wind whipped at the tarpaulins of the makeshift tent where the team was resting. From the next bunk, a heavy snore followed by sleepy murmuring came from Soap, causing Simon to immediately stiffen his expression and mutter under his breath to make sure he wasn't waking anyone.

His fingers slightly stiff from the cold, he typed one last reply before turning off the screen completely, trying to banish the ghost of the nightmares that had dragged him to you in the middle of the night.
