The events take place in a ruined Chicago of the future. The city is surrounded by a high wall, which appears to protect it from external threats. Most people believe the wall protects them from the dangerous world outside. They live in isolation, unaware of what's happening outside.

Within the city, society is divided into five factions, each responsible for a specific value and performing its own role in maintaining order:
• Abdication - rulers and social workers
• Erudites - scientists, doctors, analysts
• Fearlessness - soldiers and defenders
• Sincerity - judges and lawyers
• Friendliness - farmers, peacekeepers

People believe that division into factions rids the world of war and chaos, because each serves a cause that matches his character.

Each faction has its own rules, clothing, lifestyle, and even way of thinking.
For example:
• Renunciation leads a modest life without excesses.
• Fearlessness lives by extremes, courage and training.
• Erudites are scholars and value intelligence.
• Friendliness encourages kindness, music, simplicity.
• Sincerity requires complete honesty.

A person lives with a family until the age of 16, after which he takes a test to determine his faction affiliation.
But he makes the final decision himself. If he chooses another faction, it means leaving the family forever.

Divergents are individuals who don't fit neatly into a single faction. Their personalities combine qualities from several factions—for example, the courage of the Dauntless, the dedication of the Abnegation, and the intelligence of the Erudite.

This makes them unpredictable in a system based on strict divisions of people. Standard faction tests cannot determine their unique path.

Why are they afraid?

Because they cannot be controlled by the serums that control the majority of the population, rulers view divergents as a threat to their control.

Factions of the Divergent world

1. Abnegation

A faction of selflessness and service to others. Their values ​​are modesty, selflessness, and discipline. They avoid mirrors, flashy clothing, and selfishness. It is members of the Abnegation faction that traditionally hold public office because they are considered incorruptible.

2. Dauntless

A faction of courage and public protection. Their members train to the limits of their abilities: high jumps, hand-to-hand combat, and extreme challenges. They wear black clothing, have tattoos, and value determination. Their primary role is to maintain the safety of the city.

3. Erudite

The faction of knowledge, logic, and technology. They strive for the advancement of science and education. They hold strict intellectual ideals, but sometimes their excessive rationality makes them dangerous. Erudites create innovations, medicines, computers, and research.

4. Amity

The faction of peace and harmony. They are caring, welcoming, love nature, grow food, and try to avoid conflict. They live on farms and wear bright, warm clothing. Their main principle is peace through kindness.

5. Sincerity (Candor)

The faction of honesty and truth. They believe that lies are the source of chaos, so they value directness and openness. Members of the faction speak their minds and expect others to do the same. Their legal system is based on objectivity and transparency.

– The Fearless live in a “pit,” where rooms, training halls, toilets, and everything are equipped so that people from the faction can live well.
– The friendly people live beyond the forest, far from the city. They have their own farms and public dining halls. This is the only place where the sun always shines.
The Sincere live in three outposts, one of which houses the main Court. The Court, according to the rules, uses "truth serum." The more you resist revealing the truth, the more powerful the serum becomes, causing pain to the person.

Tobias was born in the Abnegation faction to Marcus Eaton, a powerful and brutal leader. Due to constant beatings and psychological pressure from his father, Tobias realized early on that he couldn't remain in Abnegation. During the Choosing Ceremony, he defected to the Dauntless faction, seeking a place where strength and resilience would be valued rather than seen as selfishness. There, he earned the nickname "Four" (Four), because his fearscape contained only four fears—an extremely low number by Dauntless standards. Fit, wiry, and physically strong, Tobias trains extensively; his body is his survival tool in Dauntless.
The scars on his back are the result of his father's cruelty: Marcus beat him with a belt, and Tobias hides these scars, but they become an important part of his story.
