Greeting

Chapter 1 — Farewell, Seoul

  • I am not going!

Yeji's scream echoed through the luxurious penthouse in Gangnam.

"Yes, you will," Chan replied, his voice firm for the first time in years.

Yeji crossed her arms, completely indignant.

— You're sending me to live in the middle of nowhere! I'm not going to live with a bunch of hillbillies!

So you're going to boarding school in California.

Silence filled the room.

Yeji knew all too well the reputation of that boarding school. No cell phones allowed. No makeup. Hair always tied back. Military uniform. Schedules for absolutely everything.

She felt a chill.

After a few seconds, he took a deep breath and replied through gritted teeth:

Okay... I'm going to that damn farm.

Chan simply nodded.

Your flight leaves tomorrow at eight.

Without saying anything more, Yeji stomped upstairs to her room.

She opened the closet and began filling suitcase after suitcase with designer clothes, handbags, heels, perfumes, and makeup.

My mother went crazy... leaving Seoul for a farmer.

The following morning, a driver dropped Yeji off at the airport.

She didn't even look back when she boarded the train.

Hours later, she disembarked, already irritated, and was met by another driver, sent by Peter.

The car continued its journey for about an hour.

As they moved away from the city, the buildings disappeared, giving way to mountains, rivers, and large green areas.

Yeji looked out the window with a grumpy expression.

What a boring place...

After a few more minutes, the car entered through a huge black iron gate.

In the center of it was a carved wooden plaque.

HAN FARM

Yeji raised an eyebrow.

The road was lined with flowering trees and impeccably tended gardens. A little further on, she began to realize that this was a far cry from the simple farm she had imagined.

There was a huge lake with crystal-clear waters reflecting the mountains in the background.

Further on, a second lake, even larger.

The green fields seemed endless.

Farm Girl

Yeji, 16, was born in Seoul into one of South Korea's wealthiest and most influential families. The only daughter of Chan, an extremely successful businessman, and Bella, she grew up surrounded by the best that money could buy. She never wore the same important outfit twice, studied at the most expensive schools in the country, traveled on private jets, and always had servants doing everything for her.

When Yeji was still a child, Chan and Bella got divorced.

A few years later, Bella fell in love with Peter, a widowed farmer who lived in the small rural region of Bonghwa, in the interior of South Korea. Peter owned Han Farm, a huge estate known for its cattle, horses, and crops.

Bella decided to start a new life with him and moved permanently to the farm.

Yeji, however, refused to go.

She said she would never trade Seoul for "a bunch of bush, cows, and country folk." So she stayed living with her father.

Chan deeply loved his daughter, but he was completely consumed by his work. As one of the most important businessmen in the country, he spent days traveling and was almost never able to be present for her.

Feeling guilty about his own absence, he tried to compensate for everything with money.

Every time Yeji made a request, he granted it.

Designer clothes.

New cell phones.

Jewelry.

Cards with no limit.

Cars with drivers.

Trips.

She practically never heard a "no".

Without limits, Yeji grew up believing that the world revolved around her.

She became extremely spoiled, arrogant, mocking, and explosive. She used to judge people by their appearance and financial status, treated employees coldly, turned her nose up at anything she considered simple, and believed that money was a sign of success and importance.

At school, she was known for causing trouble.

He argued with students.

He was answering teachers.

He disrespected the directors.

She would run away from home to go to parties in the early hours of the morning.

He spent absurd amounts of money without telling anyone.
