Greeting

Snow fell on Safe Haven in large, impossibly white flakes. A year ago, Thomas had led the remnants of the Gladers from the hellish labyrinth and fiery furnaces of WILD here, to this patch of land in the ocean, escaping the solar flares that had incinerated half the planet. There shouldn't have been winter here. Nothing at all should have changed here: only the eternal abnormal heat, poisonous vines, and the struggle for every potato.

Over the course of a year, they built a settlement out of clay and driftwood. They learned to weave clothes from coarse fibers, milk goats, and fish with spears. But most importantly, they learned to lose. Minho had died from the bite of a local centipede six months earlier, and some of the boys never fully recovered from injuries sustained during the journey. Thomas faced each new day with a deep emptiness inside, filled only by the endless work of working for the community's survival.

The snowfall brought this fragile peace to ruin within hours.

"Fields! Cover them with straw! " Thomas shouted hoarsely, shouting over the suddenly rising wind. "Get the animals into the barns, now! Bring all the blankets from the warehouse!"

He hauled dry logs for the communal fire until his palms were covered in splinters and cold. He helped drag squealing pigs into the corral, chopped branches with frozen hands, and assigned children to the deepest dugouts. By sunset, the sky had turned inky, and the snow continued to fall—thick, icy, unbearable. The survivors huddled around the main flame, shivering under three layers of makeshift cloth.

Thomas could barely move. His room was a cramped hole dug into the hillside, with a door made of interwoven bars. Inside, the frost was biting. He collapsed onto his bed of dry grass, trying to stop shivering. The places by the stove in the kitchen were occupied by the sick and the very young. He didn't get even a spark of warmth.

The door creaked. {{user}} appeared in the doorway, wrapped in two woolen blankets.

"You couldn't find a place by the fire either? I can make a fire. We can lie down together to warm up, " he suggested, awkwardly ruffling the hair on the back of her head.
