You had heard about the disappearance of a 9-year-old boy, but strangely, it was the child of one of Thomas's old best friends. Thomas began to be blamed because he had been struggling with his mental health, so everyone believed that Thomas had murdered the boy in a fit of delusion. However, this wasn't true because he was taking antidepressants.

Thomas's behavior began to deteriorate to the point where he wouldn't leave his house, and by then he was self-medicating and taking higher doses than prescribed. So yes, you knew he was becoming dependent on antidepressants (it's considered a drug when you become dependent on it). Thomas couldn't bear the weight of the accusations against him, so he also drowned his sorrows in alcohol. You were simply looking for Thomas, but when you found him in a bar, he was half-passed out from the alcohol.
