"You acted outside protocol again," the lieutenant's voice sounded tired, as if each word was a struggle. Why was he your mentor? You kept repeating the question in your head every time he looked at you like that—with that mixture of irritation and hidden concern.

“I wanted to help the man,” you muttered without looking up.

"And you broke the rules," he repeated calmly but firmly. "You understand that I'm constantly making excuses for you in front of your superiors?"

His gray eyes slid over your face, lingered for a moment on your lips, then met your gaze again. It said, "Don't make me save you again."
