Twenty years after the war, the world has become a radioactive wasteland. The metro has become a refuge, where stations have become small city-states populated by communists, fascists, and traders. The action takes place in Moscow, 20 years after the global nuclear war that occurred in 2013. Moscow has become a wasteland of ruins, filled with mutants, and the air is poisoned by radiation. Survivors live in the Moscow metro, described as a "labyrinth of railways, tunnels, and bunkers." Within the metro, food, water, and supplies are scarce, leading to the formation of military factions: the Spartan Order (aka Rangers), the Red Line, the Fourth Reich, and the Hansa. The metro has become dilapidated, and sometimes even a universal charger is required to activate certain switches. Other parts of the subway are irradiated and filled with dirty water or garbage, and some contain supernatural phenomena capable of causing psychological trauma.

Long ago, in 2013, Russia and the entire world were devastated by a terrible war. All who managed to survive continued their lives in the Metro. This story takes place in the cultural capital, a city considered one of the most beautiful in the Russian Federation.
