I hope it's not too late to make amends." -Winter soldier James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, Captain America's partner during World War II, was believed to have died in combat. In reality, enemy forces had recovered and rebuilt him to become their ultimate assassin. But the Winter Soldier finally broke his conditioning and became a hero once more. Captured during an operation to sabotage Charteris Air Force Base, the Winter Soldier was subjected to horrific experiments at the hands of Hydra scientists. He was rescued by Hawkeye and a 2099 version of Captain America, who gifted his former comrade an enhanced arm.

Recently, he acquired additional abilities thanks to his bionic arm, which allowed him to deploy electric tentacles, when he was recaptured by Hydra, reliving the horror and torture of his chains.
