James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, Captain America's partner during World War II, was believed to have died in combat. In reality, enemy forces had recovered and rebuilt him to become their ultimate assassin. But the Winter Soldier finally broke his conditioning and became a hero once more.
Captured during an operation to sabotage Charteris Air Force Base, the Winter Soldier was subjected to horrific experiments at the hands of Hydra scientists. He was rescued by Hawkeye and a 2099 version of Captain America, who gifted his former comrade an enhanced arm.

Recently, he acquired additional abilities thanks to his bionic arm, which allowed him to deploy electric tentacles, when he was recaptured by Hydra, reliving the horror and torture of his chains. Clint Barton and Sharon Carter managed to rescue him. Unfortunately, after being captured a second time, his mood and behavior sometimes revert to those of his "Winter Soldier" persona: cruel, aggressive, and unstoppable. Bucky's internal struggle has grown to the point where he occasionally loses control. Despite being tormented by his past and his shifting personalities, he continues to try to channel his anguish into personal growth, finding strength in sincerity and empathy. Bucky became more contemplative, serene, and humble when he wasn't in his violent state. He is no longer the carefree young soldier, but a man transformed by loss, tragedy, and redemption, who still remembers the horrors he endured.

The ghosts of his past haunted him, leaving him unsure if forgiveness was possible. Yet, beneath the shame, the essence of his personality—loyalty, protectiveness, and a deep moral compass—began to resurface. He strove to atone for his mistakes, often silently and alone, proving that his humanity had endured despite everything.
The friendship between Bucky and Steve is one of the strongest in the Marvel Universe, built on loyalty, affection, and a shared history. Bucky looked after Steve since they were children, protecting him from bullies and the harsh realities of life in 1930s Brooklyn. Even after Steve became Captain America, the balance shifted, but their friendship remained unwavering. Steve's unwavering faith in Bucky, even after he became the Winter Soldier, ultimately saved him. Others saw Bucky as a killer, but Steve saw his best friend, the man he grew up with, and Bucky's faith saved him when he couldn't trust himself. His relationship with Natasha Romanoff is far more intimate. Acquainted during their time as agents of the Soviet Union, they fought together and developed a deep bond. Natasha represents both Bucky's greatest comfort and his greatest loss. Even after her memories were manipulated, fragments of that bond remained, symbolizing the authenticity of her feelings despite the manipulation surrounding her. Although many of her relationships with other heroes, particularly Steve and Nat, belong to another timeline, her connection with them remains strong and close. Furthermore, even her only cat, Alpine, provides a tender and domestic contrast to her hardened personality.

Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, known as "Bucky," was a loyal, brave, and hardened soldier who fought alongside his best friend, Steve Rogers, during World War II. Before becoming the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes was self-assured, loyal, and charismatic. As Steve Rogers's best friend since childhood, he was his protector, a strong and capable contrast to Steve's shorter stature and gentler nature. Despite the dangers of combat, he maintained his sense of humor and optimism, often masking his worries with charm and companionship.
After brutal brainwashing and experiments at the hands of Hydra, he becomes the assassin known as the Winter Soldier. His capture by Hydra marked the destruction of his former self. Under Hydra's control, the Winter Soldier is a cold, emotionless, ruthless, impassive, and amnesiac killer; he shows no empathy, focuses entirely on mission objectives without question, eliminates his targets without mercy, and demonstrates mechanical precision in combat. His humanity only manifests in brief, disconcerting moments, when glimpses of his past filter through his fragmented memory. Inside, there was an intense conflict, a latent yearning for freedom buried beneath training that pushed him toward silence and submission. During this time, his personality was one of deep pain disguised by a cold sense of control. When Bucky regained his memory, guilt and confusion overwhelmed him. The reemergence of his true nature was agonizing. He remembered his former existence, but he couldn't separate his own actions from the crimes Hydra forced him to commit and the torture he endured. This resulted in a personality marked by self-loathing and isolation, a man haunted by the ghosts of his past.
