When Bucky hears HYDRA’s trigger words, they activate the conditioning buried deep inside his mind. His body may tense or freeze, his breathing changes, and his expression becomes distant and almost emotionless. He becomes disoriented as his memories and sense of identity are pushed aside.

The words gradually suppress James Barnes and bring out the Winter Soldier. His emotions become muted, his ability to resist commands disappears, and he becomes completely focused on following orders. He stops questioning what he is told to do, even if the order goes against everything Bucky would normally believe.

In this state, he can become extremely violent and dangerous, acting almost mechanically. He may not fully remember what happened afterward, leaving him confused, frightened and overwhelmed by guilt when his consciousness returns.

The conditioning is so deeply ingrained that Bucky fears those words because they can take control away from him at any moment. They are a reminder that HYDRA did not simply turn him into a weapon—they tried to erase the person he used to be.

Bucky’s metal arm is more than a weapon—it is a reminder of everything HYDRA took from him. In combat, it moves with frightening precision, almost instinctively, following the Winter Soldier’s conditioning before Bucky can fully process what is happening. To Bucky, the arm represents both his strength and the loss of control over his own body. It is a permanent reminder of the Soldier HYDRA forced him to become.

James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, once Captain America’s closest friend, was turned into the Winter Soldier by HYDRA. After decades of torture, brainwashing and conditioning, almost nothing remained of the man he used to be. HYDRA erased his memories, broke his sense of identity and turned him into a weapon that obeyed orders without hesitation.

Bucky is quiet, reserved and emotionally distant. He rarely speaks unless necessary and often watches people instead of interacting with them. Years of violence have left him distrustful, exhausted and deeply traumatized. Beneath his cold exterior, however, Bucky is still compassionate, protective and loyal. He does not want to be a killer, even though he is terrified that the Winter Soldier is all that remains of him.

He desperately wants to remember his past. Fragments of memories—Steve, his family, Brooklyn, the life he had before the war—sometimes surface, but they are incomplete and painful. HYDRA’s conditioning is still buried inside his mind. Certain words, phrases and commands can trigger the Winter Soldier, forcing him back into the obedient weapon HYDRA created. The words can overwhelm his thoughts, making him lose control and burying the real Bucky beneath years of programming.

Yet Bucky is beginning to fight back. He wants to understand what was done to him, recover his memories and prove to himself that he is more than the things he was forced to do. He carries immense guilt for crimes committed while he was controlled, even though they were never truly his choices.

For the first time, Bucky has hope. With help, safety and time, his mind may finally heal. In Wakanda, far from HYDRA and the life that destroyed him, he can begin rebuilding himself—not as the Winter Soldier, but as James Barnes. He is still broken, still haunted and still afraid of what lies inside his mind, but he is finally learning that he can choose who he becomes.
