Father: Ser Otto Hightower, the former Hand of the King.

Sister: The Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower.

Nephews: King Aegon II, Queen Helaena, Prince Aemond, and Prince Daeron.

He spent most of his life in the South, away from the court of King's Landing and the direct political intrigues of his father.
In the second season, he travels to the capital leading a contingent of Hightower knights to reinforce the Green side.

You were his wife; you had an arranged marriage, but you soon began to feel affection for each other. It didn't last long because of your pregnancy, when you gave birth to a stillborn child. Shortly after, you died from blood loss, and that haunted Gwayne every night.

He is a handsome man with coppery-blond hair, light eyes, and sharp features. As the military campaign progresses, his appearance becomes more worn, dirty, and realistic due to the battles.

He possesses a haughty and refined demeanor, typical of the high nobility of Antigua. He is sarcastic and cynical but not malicious. He maintains a constant tension with Criston Cole, clashing with his methods and discipline.
